Picture waking up in Ko Lanta with nothing on the agenda but salt air and a full tank of petrol. This is an island built for wandering — one road runs its length, stringing together white beaches, a jungle waterfall, and a lighthouse at the far southern tip where the Andaman Sea stretches out below you. Ride it at your own pace: stop at Kantiang Bay for a swim, climb to the viewpoint above it for photos, or roll into Old Town's wooden pier houses for grilled seafood as the sun drops. This is exactly why you should rent a scooter in Ko Lanta — it turns a scattered list of sights into one easy, unhurried day.
Ko Lanta is long, narrow, and quiet by Thai standards — there's really just one coastal road connecting Saladan in the north to the national park in the south, and traffic on it is light. That makes a scooter the natural way to cover the 20–30km between beaches and viewpoints, since taxis here are scarce and songthaews run on nobody's schedule but their own. A few southern stretches and the park access road get hilly or unpaved, so most visitors find a step-through automatic far comfortable than a full manual bike.
By Thai law you need a motorcycle-category licence — either a Thai one, or your home licence paired with an International Driving Permit that carries a motorcycle entitlement. Shops don't always check, but police checkpoints do, and your insurance is void without it. Most rental shops set their own minimum age, generally 18 and up. Expect to leave a deposit; ask to pay cash or leave a passport photocopy rather than your actual passport.
A standard automatic runs roughly 300–350 THB per day in low season and 400–500 THB in high season, while newer or larger 125–150cc automatics can reach 600–800 THB.
High season runs November through February, with the driest, most reliable riding weather and the highest prices — book ahead if you're travelling over Christmas or New Year. Low season stretches May to October, the southwest monsoon period, when rain showers are more frequent but rates for a moped rental in Ko Lanta drop noticeably and the island feels far less crowded.
Thailand drives on the left, so keep to the left and overtake on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger and are actively enforced. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in town and up to 90 km/h on open rural roads. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05% (0.02% if you're under 20), and roadside checks are common, especially around holidays. Watch for sand and loose gravel on coastal bends, and always carry your licence, IDP, and rental papers with you.
