Picture this: the ferry pulls into Ton Sai pier, the limestone cliffs of Phi Phi Don rise straight out of the turquoise water, and instead of trudging along the coastal path with your bags in the heat, you're free to nip between the two bays on a scooter. A short ride gets you from the walking-street bustle near the pier up toward the Phi Phi Viewpoint, where Ao Ton Sai and Ao Loh Dalum open up beneath you as twin curves of sand and reef. Further along, the road drops you near Long Beach, a quieter stretch of shoreline that most day-trippers never bother to reach on foot.

Phi Phi Don isn't built for long touring loops — the village core between Ton Sai and Loh Dalum is a pedestrian zone, all narrow lanes and market stalls, with no room for cars at all. That's exactly why a scooter still earns its keep here: it covers the handful of paved connector roads and beach-access tracks fast, in tropical heat where walking every errand gets old quickly. Don't expect Phuket-style highways — expect a small, efficient network that saves your legs for the beach.

Top 10 things to see in Phi Phi Island by scooter

  1. Viewpoint 1, 2 & 3 (Phi Phi Viewpoint) — the classic climb up to a panoramic overlook of Ao Ton Sai and Ao Loh Dalum's twin bays.
  2. Long Beach (Hat Yao) — a popular swimming beach a short ride south of Ton Sai, calmer than the main strip.
  3. Ao Loh Dalum (Loh Dalum Bay) — a shallow, turquoise bay on the north side, an easy loop from the pier area.
  4. Laem Thong Beach (Long Beach North) — the island's northern tip, with resorts, a longtail-boat pier and calmer water.
  5. Ao Rantee (Rantee Bay) — a quieter east-coast bay reached via the island's limited road network, good for escaping the crowds.
  6. Phi Phi Pier / Ton Sai Village — the central hub for scooter and bike hire, restaurants and the walking-street market.
  7. Bamboo Island (Koh Mai Phai) boat pier — ride to the departure point for boat trips out to this nearby snorkeling spot.
  8. Monkey Beach (Ao Ling) access trail — ride as far as the road allows, then a short trail or boat hop to meet the resident macaques.
  9. Ao Loh Bakao — a secluded east-side bay near the island's few resort roads, ideal for a low-key stop.
  10. Ton Sai to Loh Dalum connector road — the main paved stretch linking both sides of the isthmus, and the backbone of any ride on the island.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Phi Phi Island?

By Thai law you need a motorcycle-category licence — either a Thai one, or your home licence paired with an International Driving Permit that carries the motorcycle entitlement. Rental shops on the island rarely check, but police checkpoints do, and without the right paperwork your insurance is void. Most shops set a minimum age of 18 and ask for a deposit; hand over cash or a photocopy of your passport rather than the document itself.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Phi Phi Island?

Expect to pay around 150-200 THB/day in low season and 250-350 THB/day in high season, with newer or larger automatic scooters running 350-500 THB/day.

  • Prices climb during December-February, the busiest and driest months.
  • They ease off from May to October, when the island sees fewer visitors and more rain.

When to book a rental scooter in Phi Phi Island?

November through February is high season — dry, popular and priced accordingly, so book ahead if you're arriving then. May to October is low season, with softer prices but a real chance of monsoon downpours, so weigh the savings against the weather before you commit.

Local traffic rules in Phi Phi Island

Thailand drives on the left, so keep to that side and overtake on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and checkpoints do hand out on-the-spot fines for skipping one. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in built-up areas, rising on rural roads, though Phi Phi's short connector stretches rarely give you room to go fast anyway. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, dropping to 0.02% for riders under 20, and roadside breath tests are common around holidays — ride sober and carry your licence and IDP at all times.
