Picture waking up on Ko Tao with nowhere to be, a scooter waiting outside, and the whole island open to you — from the dive shops and sunset bars along Sairee Beach to the rocky, wide-open bay at Tanote on the other coast. There are no traffic lights here, hardly any cars, and every road eventually leads somewhere worth stopping for. That's the appeal of a **scooter rental in Ko Tao**: you decide when to linger and when to move on.
Ko Tao is small, but it's a lot hillier than it looks on a map, and its best beaches are scattered across two coastlines that a taxi or a pair of legs can't easily connect. A scooter closes that gap. It's light enough to thread the narrow lanes around Mae Haad and Sairee, and strong enough to climb the steep, paved routes toward Chalok Ban Kao and the wilder east side. If you want to reach places like Hin Wong Bay or Tanote — both a real workout on foot and a stretch for any taxi driver's patience — **renting a scooter in Ko Tao** is really the only practical way to get there.
By Thai law you need a motorcycle-category licence — either a Thai licence or your home licence combined with an International Driving Permit that carries the motorcycle entitlement. Some shops will hand over the keys without checking, but police checkpoints do check, and your insurance is generally void without the right paperwork. Most rentals set a minimum age of 18. You'll usually be asked for a deposit; a cash deposit or a photocopy of your passport is a safer option than handing over the original.
A standard automatic scooter runs around 180-200 THB per day in low season and 250-350 THB per day in high season, with newer or bigger automatics — think Honda Click or Yamaha NMax — closer to 400-600 THB during peak demand.
High season on Ko Tao runs roughly November through February, when the weather is at its best and prices sit at the higher end of the range. Low season stretches from May to October, with occasional rain but noticeably cheaper rates. If you're travelling over Christmas, New Year, or in July-August, book your scooter a few days ahead — demand spikes and the good bikes go first.
Thailand drives on the left, so keep to the left and overtake on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police do fine for riding without one. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in built-up areas and higher on open roads, though Ko Tao's hills and bends mean you'll rarely want to go fast anyway. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, and roadside checks are common, especially around holidays — so save the beers on Sairee Beach for after you've parked.
