Picture yourself gunning a quad along the corniche above the Côte des Basques, the Atlantic churning below and the Basque hills rolling out ahead toward Bidart. That's the pull of Biarritz on four wheels: one minute you're circling the Rocher de la Vierge with the sea spray on your face, the next you're parked at the Phare de Biarritz watching surfers carve the swell far beneath you. It's a compact stretch of coast, but every kilometre earns its keep.
Biarritz packs a lot into a small footprint, and that's exactly why a quad works so well here. The seafront corniche is quick and paved, but the roads linking Biarritz to Anglet, Bidart, Guéthary and Saint-Jean-de-Luz twist, climb and dip through Basque farmland and clifftop villages — too far to walk, too scenic to rush through in a car. A quad handles that mix of smooth coastal tarmac and rougher backroads with ease, and lets you stop wherever the view demands it.
On French public roads a quad always requires a licence. Light quadricycles up to 50cc fall under the AM category, while heavier machines need a B1 or a full category B car licence, depending on the model — the rental company will confirm which applies to their fleet. Most agencies set their own minimum age, commonly 18 or above. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Expect to leave a deposit, usually held as a credit card pre-authorisation and refunded on undamaged return; ask the rental company for the exact figure and insurance excess before you book.
Prices swing a lot with the season. In low season you can find quads from around 15-35 EUR per day, while high season pushes rates to roughly 45-80 EUR per day, and premium models can run 60-100+ EUR per day in peak weeks.
High season runs June through August, peaking hard in late July and all of August when France itself goes on holiday — book ahead, since the best machines sell out first. Low season stretches from November to March, with quieter roads and the lowest prices, though some outlets scale back their hours. If you want warm weather without the midsummer crowds and cost, aim for May, June or September.
France drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every quad rider, and CE-approved gloves are a legal requirement too — France enforces this more strictly than most countries, with real fines for skipping them. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 80 km/h on rural roads without a central barrier, so watch the local signage as some départements have restored 90 km/h. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to a near-zero 0.2 g/l for riders in their first three years of licence. Keep a hi-vis vest on board in case you need to stop roadside.
