Pisa is famous for one tilted tower, but the city rewards anyone willing to look past it — and a motorcycle is the easiest way to do that. Ride out from the historic center and within minutes you can be tracing the pinewood roads of Tenuta di San Rossore or feeling the sea breeze at Marina di Pisa. Head further and Tuscany's hill towns and coastline open up, all reachable without ever queuing for a bus.
Pisa's old town is compact, mostly closed to cars, and easy to cover on foot once you've parked — which is exactly where a scooter or motorcycle earns its keep. You can leave it close to the center and be walking into Piazza dei Miracoli minutes later, then use the same bike to reach the coast, the hills of Monte Pisano, or a walled Tuscan town, all trips that are clumsy by car and slow by public transport. If you want to rent a motorcycle in Pisa, this is a city built for exactly that kind of freedom.
The licence you need depends on the bike: category A1 covers scooters up to 125cc, while larger motorcycles require A2 or a full category A, with minimum ages rising accordingly. If your licence was issued outside the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. Rental companies generally expect riders to be adults, and you'll need to leave a deposit — usually a credit card hold, scaled to the value of the bike — plus a copy of your ID or passport.
Prices swing a lot between seasons. A basic scooter runs 25–35 EUR per day in low season, while summer scooter or mid-size motorcycle rentals climb to 45–70 EUR per day. Step up to a larger touring or premium motorcycle in peak summer and you're looking at 80 EUR upward per day.
High season runs June through August, when Tuscany's roads and the nearby coast are busiest and prices are at their highest. Low season stretches from November to March, with fewer riders around and noticeably lower rates — some seasonal outlets even scale back their hours. If you can, aim for spring or early autumn: warm, quiet roads without the midsummer premium.
Italy drives on the right, and helmets are mandatory for every rider and passenger, no exceptions. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside built-up areas, and 110–130 km/h on faster extra-urban roads and motorways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero for riders under 21 or with a licence held less than three years. One local trap worth knowing: Pisa's historic center is a camera-enforced ZTL zone, and riding into it without a permit means a fine that catches up with you weeks later.
