Padova is one of those Italian cities that quietly rewards anyone willing to look past the obvious. You could spend your whole stay circling Prato della Valle and the university quarter on foot, but the real reason to rent a motorcycle in Padova is what waits just beyond the city walls: the Colli Euganei, a range of volcanic hills threaded with vineyard roads, and villages like Arquà Petrarca that feel untouched by the centuries. Head the other way and the historic Riviera del Brenta unspools toward Venice, lined with Palladian villas.
Padova's compact center is easy on foot, but its real draw for visitors is everything around it. The Euganean Hills are a maze of winding, low-traffic roads that public transport barely touches, and a scooter or motorcycle turns them from a theoretical day trip into an easy afternoon. The same goes for the run toward Venice along the Brenta canal — scenic, well signposted, and much more rewarding on two wheels than squeezed onto a regional train.
For a 50cc moped you'll need at least an AM licence; anything from 50cc up to 125cc requires an A1. Larger machines step up through A2 and A, depending on power. If you're travelling on a licence issued outside the EU or EEA, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it — Italian traffic police do check. Most rental operators here ask for a minimum age of 18 and will take a deposit, usually as a credit card hold, scaled to the value of the bike.
Expect around 25-35 EUR per day for a scooter or small bike in low season, rising to 45-70 EUR per day in high season for larger machines. Premium touring motorcycles can run 80-120 EUR or more per day at the peak of summer.
High season runs June through August, plus the Easter week, when both prices and demand peak. Low season stretches from November to March, when rates drop and choice widens. If you can time it, May, June, September and early October give you warm, dry riding weather without the midsummer crowds or heat — and generally better rates than the July-August rush.
Italy drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a scooter or motorcycle, no exceptions by age. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on regular roads outside town, and up to 130 km/h on motorways, though 50cc mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and barred from motorways and major dual carriageways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero for riders under 21 or holding a licence less than three years. Keep your headlight on at all times, even in daylight, and watch for Padova's ZTL restricted zones in the historic center — riding into one without a permit triggers an automatic fine.
