Naples throws you straight into its own rhythm the moment you arrive — scooters weaving through Spanish Quarter alleys, the bay glinting past Via Posillipo, Vesuvius watching over it all. A **motorcycle rental in Naples** puts you inside that rhythm instead of stuck watching it from a taxi window. Ride south along the Amalfi Coast Road toward Positano, or climb up to Vesuvius for a hike to the crater rim, and you'll understand why so many riders skip the car altogether here.
Naples wasn't built for traffic. The historic centre is a maze of narrow lanes and impossible parking, and a car will lose you an hour before you've even reached the Duomo. A scooter slips through where cars can't and parks almost anywhere, which matters even more once you leave the city — the coastal roads to Sorrento and Amalfi are built from hairpins, not straightaways, and a nimble bike handles them far better than anything with four wheels.
Licence requirements depend on the machine: category A1 covers scooters up to 125cc, while larger motorcycles step up through A2 and full A. Some rental companies accept a standard car (B) licence for 125cc bikes, but this isn't guaranteed for foreign licences, so confirm with the operator before booking. If your licence was issued outside the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. Most operators set their own minimum age, typically 18, and will ask for a deposit — usually a credit card hold, scaled to the value of the bike — plus a copy of your passport or ID.
Expect to pay 25–35 EUR per day in low season, rising to 45–70 EUR in high season, and 70–100+ EUR for premium or larger-displacement models. A few things push the price around:
High season runs June through August, plus the Easter period, with the Amalfi Coast and islands filling up fastest in July and August — book well ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, when prices drop but some seasonal outlets close entirely. If you want warm weather without the crowds or the premium, aim for May, June, September or early October.
Italy drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for every rider and passenger, no exceptions, and dipped headlights must stay on at all times on two wheels. Speed limits sit at 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside built-up areas, and up to 130 km/h on motorways — though 50cc mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and barred from motorways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero for anyone under 21 or who has held a licence for less than three years. Watch for ZTL zones in the historic centre: ride into one without a permit and the fine will find you months later, with an admin charge from the rental company on top.
