Bodrum rewards anyone willing to get off the main road. Ride out to Gümüşlük for sunset over the sunken ruins of ancient Myndos, then loop back through Türkbükü on a winding coastal road that no tour bus can take. On two wheels the whole peninsula opens up — bays, windmills and beach clubs that stay half-empty because most visitors never make it past the harbor.
The peninsula is built for this. Its bays and villages sit close together, most 15 to 30 minutes apart, linked by narrow, winding roads that clog with cars and struggle for parking every summer. A scooter or motorcycle slips through that traffic and parks wherever you stop, turning a day of queuing into a day of riding.
For anything above a basic moped you'll need a licence that covers motorcycles — a car-only licence isn't enough once you're past light scooter class. Bring your home licence's motorcycle entitlement along with an International Driving Permit, since Turkish traffic police check for it even where rental shops don't. Riders are typically expected to be at least 18. A deposit is standard, usually held on a card; if a shop asks to keep your passport, a photocopy plus the deposit is the safer arrangement.
A scooter or 125cc runs roughly 900–1100 TRY per day in low season, rising to around 1600–2200 TRY in July and August. Larger or premium motorcycles start from about 2500–3500 TRY per day.
High season runs June through August, sometimes into early September, when demand and prices both peak — book ahead if you're arriving then. Low season, November to March, is cheapest but many coastal shops scale back or close. May, June, September and October hit the sweet spot: good weather, thinner crowds, and fair prices.
Turkey drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger on every motorised two-wheeler, including 50cc scooters, and police do check. Speed limits favor cars over bikes, with 50 km/h in town and 90 km/h on rural roads as the general benchmarks — motorcycles are held to lower limits. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, enforced with routine roadside testing, so it's a strict zero-tolerance ride if you've been drinking. Midsummer heat can hit 35–40°C, so plan rides for morning or evening when you're in full gear.
