Alanya's old town spills straight down from a fortified hill to the harbor, and once you're on two wheels the whole layout starts to make sense. A motorcycle gets you up the switchback road to Alanya Castle in minutes, then back down to the waterfront for a swim off Cleopatra Beach before lunch. No taxi queue, no bus timetable — just you, the coast road, and the Mediterranean glinting below the ramparts.
This is a city built for riding rather than driving. The center is compact and hilly, parking a car near the castle or the harbor is a headache, and the coastal strip stretches for kilometers with beaches, caves and viewpoints strung along it like beads. A scooter or motorcycle slips through the narrow lanes of the old town and still has the range for a half-day run inland to the Taurus foothills, something that's awkward by taxi and slow by tour bus.
Requirements depend on engine size. Small scooters and mopeds fall under a separate licence category from full motorcycles, and a car licence alone won't cover anything above moped class — bring your motorcycle entitlement if you're planning to ride a proper bike. An International Driving Permit is recommended alongside your home licence. Most operators set a minimum age of 18, and a deposit is standard, either as a card hold or in cash; it's worth insisting on a passport photocopy plus deposit rather than handing over your actual passport.
A standard scooter or 125cc runs around 900–1100 TRY per day in low season, rising to roughly 1600–2200 TRY per day in high season for the same class of bike. Larger-cc motorcycles and newer models go for 2500–4000+ TRY per day.
High season runs June through August, when the coast is busiest and prices sit at their yearly peak — book ahead if you want a specific model. Low season stretches from November to March, with far fewer riders on the road and the cheapest rates of the year. If you'd rather skip both the crowds and the summer heat, the shoulder months either side of peak season tend to offer the best balance of price and comfortable riding weather.
Turkey drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any motorised two-wheeler, including small scooters, and police do check. Speed limits in town top out at 50 km/h, rising to 90 km/h on rural roads outside the city, with motorcycles generally held to lower limits than cars. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05% for private riders, and roadside testing is routine, so it's not worth the risk. Summer traffic in Alanya's center gets dense and lane discipline is loose, so ride defensively and expect the occasional car to pull out without warning.
