Zagreb rewards anyone willing to cover ground on two wheels. Pedal from Ban Jelačić Square up into the Upper Town, where St. Mark's Church and its tiled roof sit a few short, cobbled minutes from the saddle, then freewheel down past Dolac Market before the morning stalls close. Head the other way and the city opens into green space — Lake Jarun's paved loop, Maksimir Park's shaded avenues, the Bundek lakeside path along the Sava — all reachable in the time it would take to wait for a tram.
What makes Zagreb genuinely made for cycling is its shape: a flat, walkable-but-just-too-spread-out historic centre stitched to a ring of flat parks and river paths. Nothing here demands hill legs, and nothing is close enough to see it all on foot in a single afternoon. A bicycle closes that gap exactly, letting you string together the old town and the lakeside parks in one ride instead of choosing between them.
None — Croatia requires no licence to ride a bicycle, at any age. A deposit is still standard practice, usually held on a credit card or taken in cash and returned once the bike comes back undamaged, with the amount depending on the bike itself. No international driving permit is needed either, since none is required for cycling.
Expect around EUR 3 per day in low season, rising to roughly EUR 6–8 per day in high season. An e-bike or premium hybrid typically runs EUR 10–15 per day.
June through August is Croatia's high season, when the coast fills up and Zagreb sees its own share of visitors — book ahead if you're travelling then. For value and comfort, May, June and September into early October are the sweet spot: warm, dry, and free of peak crowds. November to March is low season, with the lowest prices but cooler, wetter days better suited to shorter rides.
Croatia drives on the right, and that applies to cyclists too. Riders under 16 must wear a helmet, and at night or in poor visibility outside built-up areas, a bicycle needs working front and rear lights plus a reflective vest. Speed limits in built-up areas top out at 50 km/h, so traffic around you moves at a manageable pace. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05% for most riders, with zero tolerance for anyone under 25 — a rule worth keeping in mind even on a bicycle, since local enforcement takes it seriously.
