Split's old town is a warren of marble alleys built straight into the walls of Diocletian's Palace, and no car will ever get you through it — but a bicycle will. Roll out along the Riva waterfront with the harbor on one side and café tables on the other, then keep going until the road climbs into the pines of Marjan Hill, where the whole bay opens up below you. It's the kind of morning that makes you forget you're a tourist at all.
The city rewards two wheels in a way it never rewards four. The historic core is largely closed to cars and short on parking everywhere else, so a bike slips through where traffic stalls. The coastline is flat and hugs the sea for long, easy stretches, which means you can string together a swim, a coffee and a sunset viewpoint in a single afternoon without ever hunting for a taxi.
No licence is required to rent a bicycle, and there's no minimum age set by law. Most rental shops will ask for a small deposit, refunded when you bring the bike back undamaged, and some may hold your ID or a credit card as security instead of cash. No international driving permit is needed — that only applies to motorized vehicles.
Expect to pay around EUR 3–6 per day during low season (November to March), rising to EUR 8–15 per day in high season (June to September), with July and August at the top of that range. E-bikes and premium or road models typically run EUR 15–25 per day.
If you're chasing warm, dry weather without the crowds or the highest prices, aim for May–June or September–early October. High season runs June to August, with stock tightest and prices steepest in July and August — book a few days ahead if you're arriving then. Low season stretches from November to March, when prices drop but some shops scale back their hours, so it's worth confirming availability before you land.
Croatia drives on the right. Cyclists under 16 must wear a helmet, and if you're riding at night or in poor visibility outside built-up areas, you'll need working front and rear lights plus a reflective vest. Speed limits in built-up areas top out at 50 km/h, so traffic moves at a pace bikes can comfortably keep up with. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05% for most adults, but zero tolerance applies under 25 — worth keeping in mind if a ride includes a stop for wine.
