Phuket is not an island you sightsee from a bus window. Its beaches, viewpoints and back streets are scattered across a hilly stretch of coastline, and the best of it — the sunset over Promthep Cape, the golden light on Old Phuket Town's shophouses on Thalang Road, the hidden cove at Freedom Beach — only opens up once you're moving under your own steam. That's exactly what a scooter gives you: the freedom to stop at a viewpoint on a whim, follow a coastal road until it runs out, and set your own pace rather than someone else's tour schedule.
Public transport here is thin on the ground, and taxis add up fast if you're island-hopping between beaches all day. Phuket's roads outside Patong's rush hour are manageable for a confident rider, and the short, winding routes — up to Kata Viewpoint, down the dirt track to Freedom Beach, along the coast to Kamala — are made for exactly the kind of stop-anywhere riding a car or a songthaew simply can't offer. If you're planning to rent a scooter in Phuket, this is an island built for two wheels.
Thai law requires a motorcycle-category licence to ride a scooter — either a Thai licence or your home country's licence together with an International Driving Permit carrying the motorcycle entitlement. Many shops won't ask to see one, but police checkpoints do, and rental insurance is generally void without it. Most rental companies set a minimum age of 18, and you should expect to leave a deposit; it's better to offer cash or a photocopy of your passport rather than the document itself.
A basic automatic scooter typically runs 150–200 THB per day in low season, roughly the equivalent of a €3-a-day listing. Larger or newer models, like a Honda Click or Yamaha NMax, cost more — think 500–800 THB per day or higher, with big bikes priced well above that.
High season runs November through February, when the island is driest and busiest, and prices for a scooter rental in Phuket sit at their highest. Booking a little ahead during these months is worth it, especially around the December–January peak. Outside that window, from May to October, you'll find lower prices and thinner crowds, though monsoon showers can roll in without much warning.
Thailand drives on the left, so overtake on the right and keep that in mind at every junction. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police do issue on-the-spot fines for riding without one. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in town and up to 90 km/h on rural roads outside it. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, tightened to 0.02% for newer licence holders, and roadside breath tests are common, particularly around public holidays. Carry your licence, IDP and rental papers at all times — checkpoints are frequent in Phuket.
