Picture a morning ride from Lecci down toward Plage de Pampelonne, salt air on your face, before the sun turns the sand too hot to walk on barefoot. Or an afternoon spin up to Gassin, one of the "most beautiful villages of France," where the road climbs just enough to earn the view. This is what a bicycle gets you here that a car never will: the small roads, the closed-off corners, the moment you stop and nobody's honking behind you. Add the old port in Saint-Tropez, the windmills at Moulins de Paillas, or a longer loop around the gulf to Port Grimaud, and you start to see why so many visitors skip four wheels altogether.
The Saint-Tropez peninsula is small on the map but stubborn underfoot — narrow lanes, real hills between the hilltop villages, and, come July and August, traffic that barely moves. A bike sidesteps all of it. You're never hunting for parking in Ramatuelle or queuing behind scooters on the coast road; you just ride past. Distances between Gassin, Ramatuelle, Pampelonne and Saint-Tropez are only a few kilometers, short enough to string several sights into one afternoon, yet hilly enough that an e-bike is worth considering if you'd rather save your legs for the beach.
No licence is needed to ride a bicycle in France. Rental companies do generally ask that the person signing the contract be an adult, 18 or over, though children can ride equipment booked under a parent's agreement. A deposit is standard, usually held on a credit card and released when the bike comes back undamaged — amounts vary by shop and by bike, so confirm it when you book. No International Driving Permit applies here; that's only relevant for motorised rentals. One legal note worth knowing: a helmet is compulsory for any rider or passenger under 12.
A basic city or beach bike runs roughly EUR 3–8 per day in low season, rising to EUR 15–30 per day in high season for a standard bike. E-bikes and performance road bikes go further, up to EUR 30–50 per day when demand peaks.
High season on the peninsula runs June through August, with late July and August the tightest for both availability and price — this is when Saint-Tropez fills up fastest, so booking a few weeks ahead is wise if you want a specific model. Low season, November to March, is quieter and cheaper, though some smaller rental outlets reduce their hours or close. If you can time your trip for May, June or September, you'll find warmer, settled weather, longer days, and noticeably better rates than in the peak of summer.
France drives on the right, and that applies to cyclists too. A helmet isn't legally required for adult cyclists, only for riders and passengers under 12, though wearing one is always sensible on the peninsula's hillier lanes. Speed limits in town drop to 50 km/h from the town-name sign onward, and on rural roads without a central barrier the limit is generally 80 km/h — useful to know if you're sharing a road with cars and scooters heading to the same beaches. Cycling under the influence carries the same 0.5 g/l blood-alcohol limit as driving, so it's best to save the rosé for after you've parked the bike. Outside built-up areas at night or in poor visibility, a reflective vest is required by law.
