Hoi An rewards slow travel, and nothing matches its pace better than two wheels and no engine. Wander out from the lantern-lit lanes of the Hoi An Ancient Town in the early morning, before the tour groups arrive, and you can be pedalling past the herb beds of Tra Que Vegetable Village within fifteen minutes. Head the other way and the road opens onto rice paddies and the palm-lined water channels of Cam Thanh, with a cold drink waiting for you at An Bang Beach by the time the sun starts to dip. This is a city built for a bicycle, not a windscreen.

The old quarter itself is largely closed to cars, and much of it is off-limits to motorbikes at certain hours too, so a bicycle is often the only vehicle that can take you straight to your hotel door or down the narrow lanes near the river. Beyond the town centre, the surrounding countryside is flat, quiet and criss-crossed with farm tracks that a scooter would rattle straight past — on a bike you notice the water buffalo, the basket boats, the smell of drying rice paper. Most of the sights that make Hoi An special sit within a two to eight kilometre ring, an ideal distance for a relaxed ride rather than a taxi fare.

Top 10 things to see in Hoi An by bicycle

  1. Hoi An Ancient Town — the UNESCO old quarter, with the Japanese Covered Bridge, centuries-old merchant houses and lantern-strung streets; the natural starting point of any ride.
  2. An Bang Beach — the closest good stretch of sand, about 4km out, with beach bars that come alive at sunset.
  3. Cua Dai Beach — a quieter beach a short pedal southeast of town, good if you want space to yourself.
  4. Tra Que Vegetable Village — flat, easy lanes through working herb and vegetable gardens, roughly 3km from the centre.
  5. Cam Thanh Coconut Village — the palm-lined Bay Mau Coconut Forest, famous for basket-boat rides and one of the best countryside loops around.
  6. An Hoi Night Market — over the bridge on the river peninsula, worth timing your ride for the evening.
  7. Thu Bon River cycling route — riverside paths and rural lanes linking the old town to the farmland beyond.
  8. Kim Bong Carpentry Village — a traditional boat-building village reached by a short crossing on the far bank of the Thu Bon.
  9. Marble Mountains (Ngu Hanh Son) — limestone hills riddled with cave pagodas, about 18km toward Da Nang and best for confident riders.
  10. My Son Sanctuary — Cham temple ruins around 40km out, a long-distance ride suited to experienced cyclists or combined with other transport.

What do you need to rent a bicycle in Hoi An?

Renting is refreshingly simple: Vietnam sets no licence, registration or minimum age requirement for a pedal bike, and helmets aren't legally required either, though wearing one is never a bad idea on shared roads. Shops typically ask for a small cash deposit or hold your ID while you ride, with the exact amount varying by shop and by how new the bike is. No international driving permit is needed for a bicycle — that requirement only kicks in once you move up to a motorised scooter.

How much does it cost to rent a bicycle in Hoi An?

Expect to pay around 70,000–90,000 VND per day for a basic city bike in low season, rising to 100,000–150,000 VND during busier months. If you'd rather ride electric or want a higher-end model, budget 150,000–250,000 VND per day.

  • Prices climb from December to March, when the dry season and Tết both bring a wave of visitors.
  • May to August is the cheapest stretch, when heat and rain thin out the crowds.
  • September to November sits in between, as a shoulder season with moderate rates.

When to book a rental bicycle in Hoi An?

December through March is high season here, driven by dry, comfortable weather and the Tết holiday rush — book a day or two ahead if you're travelling then, since good bikes go quickly. May to August is low season, hot and prone to sudden downpours but easy on the wallet. September to November brings central Vietnam's own risk of typhoons and flooding, so check the forecast before committing to a full day out, even though prices are friendlier.

Local traffic rules in Hoi An

Vietnam drives on the right, and while a bicycle keeps you outside most of the motorised rules, it pays to know them since you'll be sharing the road. Helmets are compulsory for anyone on a motorbike or scooter, alcohol limits for drivers are effectively zero, and speed limits are lower inside town than on the open road. Stick to the flow of traffic, ride defensively at intersections, and Hoi An's mostly flat, low-speed streets make it one of the more forgiving places in Vietnam to get around on two wheels.
