Biarritz has a way of making you want to move at its pace — unhurried on the promenade, sharper on the descents. Freewheel down from the town center to the Rocher de la Vierge, lock up for ten minutes to cross the footbridge to the lighthouse, then keep rolling south along the coast road toward Côte des Basques, where the surf crowd gathers below the cliffs at golden hour. A car can't get you this close to the water this often, and on foot the distances between the best spots start to add up fast.
This is a compact town with a hilly spine and a flat, easy waterfront, which is exactly the layout a bike handles best. You can coast the seafront from the casino to the Grande Plage without breaking a sweat, then tackle the short, steep pull up to the Phare de Biarritz when you're ready for a view worth the climb. Parking near any of the beaches in July is its own kind of ordeal — a bike sidesteps all of it, and it opens up longer rides north to Anglet or south toward the Spanish border that a rental car handles far more awkwardly.
No licence is required to rent a bicycle in France. Rental shops normally ask that whoever signs the contract be an adult, 18 or over, though children are welcome to ride on a parent's booking. A refundable deposit is standard, usually held as a card pre-authorization and released when the bike comes back undamaged — ask the shop for the exact amount when you book. No IDP is needed for a bicycle. Note that French law requires a helmet for any rider or passenger under 12.
Prices swing a lot with the season. Our listings start as low as 3 EUR per day in low season, and a standard bike in high season runs roughly 12-25 EUR per day. If you want a road bike or an e-bike, expect around 15-30 EUR per day.
July and August are Biarritz's high season, with the whole of France on holiday and the coast booked out well in advance — reserve your bike ahead if you're coming then. Easter and the May holiday weekends bring a smaller secondary rush. From November through March things quiet down considerably, prices drop, and some smaller outlets reduce their hours. For the best mix of good weather and manageable crowds, aim for May, June or September, when the coast is calmer and rates are noticeably lower than midsummer.
France drives on the right, and cycling here follows the same side. Helmets aren't legally required for adult cyclists, only for riders and passengers under 12, though wearing one is always a sensible idea on the hillier stretches near the coast. Speed limits in built-up areas like central Biarritz are 50 km/h, so shared roads stay relatively calm. If you're riding outside town at night or in poor visibility, French law asks cyclists to wear a reflective vest. There's no alcohol limit that applies specifically to cycling, but it's best to treat the coast road with the same caution as any traffic.
