Inland Puglia moves at its own pace, and nothing suits it better than two wheels. Base yourself in Castellana Grotte and you are minutes from the show caves the town is named for, with the whitewashed lanes of Locorotondo and the trulli of Alberobello just a short, scenic ride further into the Valle d'Itria. Rent a motorcycle here and the whole region opens up — dry-stone walls, olive groves and hilltop towns you would otherwise only glimpse from a tour bus window.
This is backroad country, not city-traffic country, and that is exactly why a scooter or small motorcycle makes more sense than a car. The historic centers of Locorotondo, Cisternino and Martina Franca were built for feet and carts, not parking lots, so arriving on two wheels means you can leave your bike right at the edge of town and walk straight in. The narrow, twisting rural roads linking these towns are genuinely enjoyable to ride, and without a car's bulk you will find parking a non-issue wherever you stop.
For a moped up to 50cc you need at least a category AM licence. Anything from 50cc up to 125cc requires category A1, though holders of a full car (B) licence may sometimes ride a 125cc locally — check with the rental operator, as acceptance of a foreign B licence varies. Larger motorcycles step up through A2 and A. If your licence was issued outside the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with it. Most operators ask for a minimum age of 18 and take a deposit, usually as a card hold, scaled to the value of the bike.
Expect to pay around 20-30 EUR per day in low season and 35-55 EUR per day in high season, with larger or newer motorcycles running 50-70+ EUR per day compared to basic scooters.
High season runs June through September, peaking hard in July and August, when both prices and demand for a motorcycle rental in Castellana Grotte are at their highest — book ahead if you are travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, with the calmest, cheapest riding often found in the shoulder months of May, June, September and early October, when the countryside is just as beautiful without the midsummer heat.
Italy drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger, no exceptions. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on rural roads outside built-up areas, and up to 110-130 km/h on faster main roads and motorways, though 50cc mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and barred from motorways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero for anyone under 21 or who has held a licence less than three years. Dipped headlights must stay on at all times while riding. If you want to rent a scooter in Castellana Grotte or step up to something larger, just use the search form at the top of the page. Have a nice trip!
