Hannover doesn't announce itself the way Rome or Berlin do — and that's exactly why a motorcycle suits it so well. Swing along the promenade around the Maschsee as the evening light hits the water, then peel off toward the Herrenhäuser Gärten, where baroque fountains and clipped hedge mazes sit at the edge of the city like a secret garden most visitors never find. You can be at either one in minutes, and just as easily gone again, chasing the next stop instead of waiting for a bus that never quite goes where you want.
What makes Hannover work so well for two wheels is its size: compact enough that the historic core, the lake and the green belt of the Eilenriede forest are all a short ride apart, but spread out enough that walking gets old fast. Traffic is manageable rather than chaotic, parking a scooter or motorcycle near the Altstadt is far less of a headache than hunting for a car space, and the flat terrain means you can cover a lot of ground without much effort. It's also a launchpad — the Deister hills and the Steinhuder Meer are close enough for a half-day escape that would be awkward by train or bus, but simple on a bike.
The licence you need depends on the machine. An A1 licence covers bikes up to 125 cc / 11 kW from age 16, A2 covers up to 35 kW from age 18, and a full A licence is unrestricted from age 24 (or age 20 after two years on A2). Car-licence holders can also add the B196 extension for 125 cc bikes, though that's only valid inside Germany. Most rental companies set their own minimum age, usually 18 and up, and may require you to have held your licence for a minimum period on larger machines, so check with the specific operator. A deposit is standard, normally held on a credit card in the main driver's name, and if you're travelling from outside the EU it's worth carrying an International Driving Permit alongside your national licence.
Expect to pay around EUR 25-35 per day in low season, rising to EUR 45-65 per day in high season, with premium and larger-displacement models running EUR 70-100 or more per day.
High season runs May to September, with July and August the busiest thanks to the school holidays — book your motorcycle well ahead if you're travelling then. Low season runs November to March, when some operators trim their fleets or close for winter altogether, so prices drop but choice narrows. If you want the sweet spot, aim for late May, June or September: mild weather, long daylight and noticeably lighter traffic than in the middle of summer.
Germany drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a motorcycle, moped or scooter — no exceptions. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 100 km/h on rural roads outside them; much of the Autobahn has no general limit, though an advisory 130 km/h applies and many stretches carry posted limits. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, but it drops to zero for riders under 21 or still in their two-year probationary period. Motorcycles must ride with dipped headlights on at all times, and at unmarked junctions the right-before-left rule applies, including in residential streets.
