Stuttgart is a city built on hills, and there's no better way to feel that than on two wheels. Ride out past the Mercedes-Benz Museum, catch the curves up toward the Fernsehturm, and within half an hour you can be leaning through the Schwäbische Alb's limestone plateaus with nothing but open road ahead. This is a city where a bike doesn't just get you around — it opens up an entire region of castles, vineyards and racetrack-worthy bends most visitors never see.

Stuttgart's centre is a knot of steep streets and tram lines squeezed into a valley, and traffic here can be slow and unforgiving for anyone on four wheels. A motorcycle slips through it easily, and once you're clear of downtown, the surrounding hills and the Neckar valley reward you with some of the best twisty riding roads in Germany, all reachable in under an hour. If you want to rent a motorcycle in Stuttgart, this is exactly the kind of city where it pays off.

Top 10 things to see in Stuttgart by motorcycle

  1. Schwäbische Alb (Swabian Jura) loop — a classic day-trip region south of the city, with winding roads through limestone plateaus, castles and forest.
  2. Mercedes-Benz Museum — an easy ride from downtown and a favourite photo stop for anyone into motoring history.
  3. Porsche Museum — a short hop to Zuffenhausen and something of a pilgrimage site for riders.
  4. Fernsehturm Stuttgart (TV Tower) — a scenic climb to a hilltop viewpoint over the whole city.
  5. Birkenkopf (Monte Scherbelino) — the highest point inside city limits, rideable almost to the top, with panoramic views.
  6. Solitude Ring — the historic road-racing circuit around Schloss Solitude on the western edge of town, loved for its curves and racing heritage.
  7. Neckar Valley wine route — a river-hugging ride past terraced vineyards between Stuttgart, Esslingen and Bad Cannstatt.
  8. Killesbergturm and Höhenpark Killesberg — a quick loop up to the northern hills for a lookout tower and green space.
  9. Schwäbisch Hall — a well-preserved half-timbered old town about an hour northeast, a favourite weekend destination.
  10. Ludwigsburg Residential Palace — a baroque palace complex just north of the city, a natural stop on any local touring route.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in Stuttgart?

The licence you need depends on the bike. An A1 licence covers machines up to 125 cc / 11 kW from age 16, A2 covers up to 35 kW from age 18, and full A is unrestricted from age 24 (or 20 after two years on A2). If you already hold a car licence, the B196 extension lets you ride a 125 cc bike, but only within Germany — it won't help if your home licence is from abroad. Visitors from outside the EU should bring an International Driving Permit alongside their national licence. Most rental companies set their own minimum age, usually 18 and up, and will ask for a deposit on a credit card in the main rider's name.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Stuttgart?

Expect to pay 25-35 EUR per day in low season and 40-60 EUR per day in high season for a standard bike; premium touring or sport models run 70-120 EUR per day.

  • Prices climb from spring onward and peak June-August, when demand is highest.
  • They drop back down from November through February, the cheapest months to book.
  • Booking early matters most for popular touring bikes in midsummer.

When to book a rental motorcycle in Stuttgart?

High season runs May to September, busiest in July and August during the school holidays — book ahead if you want a specific model. Low season stretches from November to March, when many operators run reduced fleets or close for winter altogether, but prices are at their lowest. If you can, aim for late May, June or September: mild weather, long daylight and quieter roads than the July-August rush, without the winter shutdown.

Local traffic rules in Stuttgart

Germany drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a motorcycle or scooter, and your headlight must stay on, dipped, day and night. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 100 km/h on the open road, with no general limit on much of the Autobahn beyond an advisory 130 km/h. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero if you're under 21 or still in your first two years of holding a licence. At unmarked junctions, right-of-way goes to traffic coming from the right — a rule that catches out plenty of visitors in Stuttgart's residential side streets.
