Stuttgart is a city built on hills, and there's no better way to feel that than on two wheels. Ride out past the Mercedes-Benz Museum, catch the curves up toward the Fernsehturm, and within half an hour you can be leaning through the Schwäbische Alb's limestone plateaus with nothing but open road ahead. This is a city where a bike doesn't just get you around — it opens up an entire region of castles, vineyards and racetrack-worthy bends most visitors never see.
Stuttgart's centre is a knot of steep streets and tram lines squeezed into a valley, and traffic here can be slow and unforgiving for anyone on four wheels. A motorcycle slips through it easily, and once you're clear of downtown, the surrounding hills and the Neckar valley reward you with some of the best twisty riding roads in Germany, all reachable in under an hour. If you want to rent a motorcycle in Stuttgart, this is exactly the kind of city where it pays off.
The licence you need depends on the bike. An A1 licence covers machines up to 125 cc / 11 kW from age 16, A2 covers up to 35 kW from age 18, and full A is unrestricted from age 24 (or 20 after two years on A2). If you already hold a car licence, the B196 extension lets you ride a 125 cc bike, but only within Germany — it won't help if your home licence is from abroad. Visitors from outside the EU should bring an International Driving Permit alongside their national licence. Most rental companies set their own minimum age, usually 18 and up, and will ask for a deposit on a credit card in the main rider's name.
Expect to pay 25-35 EUR per day in low season and 40-60 EUR per day in high season for a standard bike; premium touring or sport models run 70-120 EUR per day.
High season runs May to September, busiest in July and August during the school holidays — book ahead if you want a specific model. Low season stretches from November to March, when many operators run reduced fleets or close for winter altogether, but prices are at their lowest. If you can, aim for late May, June or September: mild weather, long daylight and quieter roads than the July-August rush, without the winter shutdown.
Germany drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a motorcycle or scooter, and your headlight must stay on, dipped, day and night. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 100 km/h on the open road, with no general limit on much of the Autobahn beyond an advisory 130 km/h. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero if you're under 21 or still in your first two years of holding a licence. At unmarked junctions, right-of-way goes to traffic coming from the right — a rule that catches out plenty of visitors in Stuttgart's residential side streets.
