Picture leaving the Altstadt behind on two wheels, the Rhine catching the afternoon light as you head south toward Bergisches Land, where the roads start to curve properly. That's the promise of a ride out of Düsseldorf — a city compact enough to explore in an afternoon, with genuinely rewarding countryside twenty minutes past its edges. You'll pass beer halls near Burgplatz, glide along the Rheinuferpromenade under the Rhine Tower, and still make it out to a medieval fortress town by lunchtime.

Düsseldorf works particularly well on a motorcycle because the city itself is easy — narrow Altstadt lanes, quick parking, no wrestling a car through MedienHafen traffic — while everything outside it opens up. Bergisches Land to the east is one of Germany's best-known touring regions, full of tight bends through forest and farmland, and Rhine-side towns like Zons and Kaiserswerth reward a short hop with real medieval atmosphere. A bicycle can't cover that ground in a day; a scooter or motorcycle can, easily.

Top 10 things to see in Düsseldorf by motorcycle

  1. Düsseldorf Altstadt (Old Town) — the compact historic core around Burgplatz, right beside the Rhine promenade, makes an easy loop to start or end a ride.
  2. Rheinuferpromenade & Rheinturm — the riverside promenade past the Rhine Tower and MedienHafen is the classic in-city cruise, with skyline views the whole way.
  3. Schloss Benrath — an 18th-century pink palace with parkland just south of the centre, a scenic short hop out of town.
  4. Kaiserswerth — a quiet riverside district north of the city with medieval Kaiserpfalz ruins, popular for a short Rhine-side run.
  5. Schloss Zons / Zons Altstadt — a fortified medieval town on the Rhine near Dormagen, a favourite short destination just south of the city.
  6. Schloss Dyck — a moated Renaissance castle near Jüchen with gardens, a well-known target for weekend rides west of Düsseldorf.
  7. Neandertal — the valley near Mettmann pairs a winding approach with the Neanderthal Museum as your destination.
  8. Bergisches Land — the hilly region east of the city is one of the area's best-loved touring routes, full of curving country roads.
  9. Drachenfels & Königswinter (Siebengebirge) — a longer day-ride south along the Rhine to a hilltop ruin with panoramic views.
  10. Xanten Archäologischer Park — a Roman archaeological park north along the Lower Rhine, ideal for a longer scenic run out of the city.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in Düsseldorf?

The licence you need depends on the bike: class A1 covers machines up to 125 cc from age 16, A2 covers up to 35 kW from 18, and full class A is unrestricted from 24 (or 20 after two years on A2). If you'd rather stick to a 50 cc scooter, a standard car licence usually covers that too. Rental companies in Düsseldorf typically set their own minimum age, often 18 and up, and a minimum time you must have held your licence for larger bikes — check with the operator you book with. A deposit is standard, usually held on a credit card in the main rider's name, and non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Düsseldorf?

Expect roughly EUR 25–35 per day for a small or standard bike in low season, rising to EUR 45–90 in high season, with premium touring or sport models running EUR 70–120 per day at peak times.

  • Prices climb through spring and peak in July–August.
  • November through February is the cheapest and quietest stretch.
  • Booking a couple of weeks ahead for summer weekends is worth it, since the best bikes go first.

When to book a rental motorcycle in Düsseldorf?

High season runs May to September, busiest in July and August when school holidays fill the calendar — book ahead if you want a specific model. Low season is November to March, when many rental operators reduce their fleets or close for winter altogether, so prices drop but choice narrows too. Late May, June and September hit the sweet spot: mild weather, long daylight, and noticeably lighter traffic on the classic Bergisches Land routes than in midsummer.

Local traffic rules in Düsseldorf

Germany drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a motorcycle, moped or scooter. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 100 km/h on open roads outside them; much of the Autobahn has no fixed limit but carries an advisory 130 km/h. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for motor vehicles, dropping to zero if you're under 21 or still within your first two years of holding a licence. Motorcycles ride with dipped headlights on at all times, and at unmarked junctions — common even in residential Düsseldorf — the rule is right-before-left.
