Dresden feels made for two wheels the moment you cross the Elbe and see the Frauenkirche's dome catch the light over the Altstadt. Park a scooter or motorcycle near the old town and within minutes you can be tracing the river past the Brühlsche Terrasse, then climbing into the hills toward the Elbschlösser — three palaces stacked above the water that most visitors on foot never quite reach. Rent a motorcycle in Dresden and the city stops being a museum you walk through and becomes a base you ride out from.
That's really the point of doing it here on a bike rather than in a car or on the tram. The Altstadt itself is compact enough to see on foot, but the good stuff — the Elbtal wine route to Meissen, the switchbacks of Saxon Switzerland, the forest lanes around Moritzburg — sits 20 to 45 minutes outside town, exactly the distance where a car feels slow and public transport feels limiting. A motorcycle rental in Dresden clears the in-town sights quickly, then keeps going into terrain that rewards a rider: sandstone cliffs, tight curves, quiet lakeside roads.
The licence you need depends on the machine. An A1 licence covers bikes up to 125cc / 11kW from age 16, A2 covers up to 35kW from 18, and full class A is unrestricted from 24 (or 20 after two years on A2). If you only hold a car licence, the B196 extension lets you ride a 125cc machine, but only inside Germany — it won't help on a foreign licence. Non-EU visitors generally need an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Expect to leave a deposit, usually held on a credit card in the main rider's name, with the amount set by the rental company and the value of the bike.
Average rental prices run EUR 25–30 per day in low season and EUR 40–55 per day in high season, with premium and larger-displacement models reaching EUR 60–90 per day.
High season runs May to September, busiest in July and August with school holidays pushing demand and prices up — book ahead if you want a specific model. Low season is November to March, when many motorcycle rental operations cut back or close for winter entirely. Late May to June and September hit the sweet spot: mild weather, long daylight, lighter traffic on the classic routes, and prices below the midsummer peak.
Germany drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every motorcycle and scooter rider and passenger, no exceptions. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 100 km/h on rural roads outside them, with the Autobahn largely unrestricted though an advisory 130 km/h applies on stretches without posted limits. Motorcycles must run with dipped headlights on at all times, day and night. The blood alcohol limit for riding is 0.5 g/l, dropping to 0.3 g/l if you're involved in an incident, and zero if you're under 21 or still in your first two years on a licence. At unmarked junctions, right-before-left applies, and trams generally have priority.
