Hannover doesn't feel like a city built for cars — it feels like one built for wheels of the pedal kind. Glide along the Maschsee on a warm evening and you'll pass joggers, café tables and swimmers without ever hearing an engine. Push further into the Herrenhäuser Gärten and the baroque fountains and clipped hedges of the Great Garden slow you down on their own. This is a city that rewards a bit of curiosity, and a bike is the easiest way to follow it.
Hannover is flat, compact, and genuinely built around cycling: dedicated paths run straight through the Eilenriede forest and along the Leine river, linking the center to the lake and the gardens without ever forcing you onto a busy road. Distances that would mean a short, forgettable car ride become a pleasant twenty-minute pedal, and a single day is enough to loop the lake, wander the old town and reach Herrenhausen — all while traffic simply isn't part of the equation.
Nothing gets in your way here. There's no licence and no minimum age for a standard city bike, and no IDP is needed either. Rentals usually ask for a small deposit or your ID rather than a large card hold — bicycles are the most relaxed category on our website in that respect. Just note that faster S-Pedelecs (45 km/h e-bikes) count legally as mopeds and need a licence, so if you want an e-bike, check which type you're booking.
A standard city bike runs from around 3 EUR per day in low season up to 8–15 EUR per day in high season, while e-bikes and premium trekking models sit at 15–25 EUR per day.
High season runs May to September, peaking in July and August — book a few days ahead if you want your pick of bikes at the best rate. Low season stretches from November to March, when prices fall and city bike rental keeps running year-round even though many motorcycle and quad operators close for winter. If you can time it, late May, June or September gives you mild weather and lighter crowds on the Maschsee loop.
Germany drives on the right, and that applies to bikes too. There's no helmet law for cyclists at any age, though wearing one is sensible, especially in the Eilenriede's mixed trails. In town, the general limit for motor traffic is 50 km/h, but you'll barely notice it on a bike path — just remember to use lit front and rear lights after dark, since riding unlit is a common and reliably fined offence. Cyclists face no low blood-alcohol threshold like drivers do, but a criminal-liability limit still kicks in at 1.6 g/l, so it's best to keep the ride clear-headed. At unmarked junctions, right-before-left is the rule, and trams generally have priority. Rent a bike in Hannover through our search form at the top of the page, and enjoy the ride. Have a nice trip!
