Hamm doesn't announce itself the way Cologne or Münster do, and that's exactly why it rewards two wheels. Pedal out from the centre and within minutes you're gliding past the Wasserschloss Oberwerries, its moat catching the light on the banks of the Lippe, or tracing the towpath of the Datteln-Hamm-Kanal toward the old harbour. Rent a bicycle here and Hamm turns into a string of quiet discoveries — a moated castle, a glass elephant, a wetland reserve — none of them more than an easy ride apart.
What makes Hamm particularly well suited to cycling is its geography: flat Westphalian terrain, wide canal- and riverside paths, and sights scattered just far enough apart to be tedious on foot but effortless by bike. The Lippe and the Datteln-Hamm-Kanal both cut through town with dedicated, well-surfaced paths, and the Römer-Lippe-Route threads straight through the city centre, linking everything into one continuous, low-effort loop. If you want to rent a bike in Hamm, this is a city built for exactly that.
For an ordinary bicycle you need nothing at all — no licence and no minimum age. Children under 8 ride on the pavement, those up to 10 can choose pavement or cycle path, and from 11 they move onto the road or cycle path. If you'd rather rent an e-bike, standard pedal-assist models capped at 25 km/h count as regular bicycles, so the same rules apply. Faster S-Pedelecs (up to 45 km/h) are legally mopeds and need a licence, helmet and insurance plate, so check which type you're booking. A deposit is common, though for bicycles it's often smaller than for motorised vehicles, sometimes just an ID. Visitors from outside the EU don't need an International Driving Permit for cycling — it simply isn't required.
A basic city bike runs roughly EUR 3–5 per day in low season and EUR 8–12 per day in high season. If you'd rather cover more ground, an e-bike or trekking bike costs around EUR 15–25 per day.
High season runs from May to September, with July and August the busiest and priciest weeks — book ahead if you're planning a summer visit. Low season stretches from November to March, when prices drop and city bike rental keeps running year-round even as motorcycle and quad operators often close for winter. For the best balance of mild weather and lighter demand, aim for late May, June, or September.
Germany drives on the right. There's no helmet law for cyclists at any age, though wearing one is widely recommended on shared paths and busier roads. Speed limits sit at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 100 km/h outside them, though as a cyclist you'll mostly be on dedicated paths well below either figure. Where a blue mandatory-use sign marks a cycle path, you're required to use it, and handheld phone use while riding is an offence. Lights front and rear are compulsory after dark. Cyclists face a criminal-liability alcohol threshold of 1.6 g/l, dropping to 0.3 g/l if you're involved in an accident — worth keeping in mind after an evening in one of Hamm's beer gardens. At unmarked junctions, right-before-left applies, and trams always have priority.
