Essaouira has a way of slowing you down and speeding you up at the same time. The medina moves at walking pace, all narrow blue-and-white lanes and fish grilling by the port, but the coast around it is built for a motorcycle. Ride out past the ramparts and the Atlantic wind takes over — empty roads, dune villages, and surf towns strung along the water all the way to Sidi Kaouki and beyond. This is exactly the kind of place where you want to rent a motorcycle in Essaouira and just follow the coast for a day.
The old town itself is pedestrian, so a bike does you no good inside the walls — you'll park it and walk the souks like everyone else. But everything that makes Essaouira worth lingering over sits outside walking distance and mostly outside petit-taxi range too: the surf beach at Sidi Kaouki, the dune viewpoint at Cap Sim, the ghost-town pull of Diabat. A car feels like overkill on these narrow, quiet roads, and a bicycle struggles against the wind that gives the city its nickname, "the Wind City." A scooter or motorcycle hits the sweet spot, turning what would be a long taxi negotiation into an easy half-day loop.
You'll generally need a valid motorcycle licence, with the exact class depending on the engine size — a car-only licence usually won't cover anything bigger than the smallest scooters. Bringing an International Driving Permit alongside your national licence is the safe move. Most rental companies set their own minimum age, commonly 21, and will ask for a deposit, usually as cash or a card imprint, along with your passport details.
A standard scooter or 125cc motorcycle runs around 250-280 MAD per day in low season, climbing to roughly 400-550 MAD per day in high season. Larger adventure or touring bikes cost more, sometimes 600-900 MAD per day or higher at peak times.
High season along this stretch of coast runs through July and August, when Essaouira fills up with beachgoers and prices sit at their peak — book a few weeks ahead if you're travelling then. Outside that window, from November to February, demand drops and so do rates, making it easier to find a good bike without planning far in advance.
Morocco drives on the right, with overtaking on the left. Helmets are legally required for both rider and passenger, and it's worth wearing one regardless of how loosely that's enforced locally. Speed limits run around 60 km/h in town, 100 km/h on the open coastal roads, and enforcement includes frequent radar checks, especially entering and leaving villages. Morocco takes a zero-tolerance line on drink-driving, so don't ride after any alcohol at all. Beyond that, expect to share the road with pedestrians, donkey carts, and the odd unlit vehicle after dark — riding outside town after sunset is best avoided.
