Essaouira has a way of making you slow down and then, on a scooter, speed right back up. Roll out through the medina gates and the Atlantic wind hits you as you follow the coast road, ramparts of the Skala de la Ville on one side, open sea on the other. This is a place built for two wheels: once you're past the walls, the coastline unfurls in both directions, and a **scooter rental in Essaouira** is what turns a single afternoon into beaches, dune villages and fishing ports you'd otherwise never reach.
The medina itself is pedestrian, gated and impossible to drive through, so locals and visitors alike park scooters just outside the walls and use them for what lies beyond. South to Sidi Kaouki and north to Moulay Bouzerktoun are each a flat, well-surfaced 25-kilometre run — too far to walk, too scenic to rush past in a shared taxi. Traffic here is nowhere near what you'd find in Marrakech or Agadir, and the coastal road is flat and easy, so even a small-displacement scooter feels comfortable and safe for a casual rider.
You'll generally need a valid licence — a standard car licence is usually accepted in practice at tourist-area rental shops, though it's worth confirming when you book. Most operators set a minimum age of 21, even where the legal minimum is lower, and some ask that you've held your licence for a set period. Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence to be safe. A deposit is standard too, usually taken as cash or a card imprint, along with your passport details.
A basic 50cc scooter runs roughly 120–180 MAD per day in low season, rising to about 200–350 MAD per day in high season. Step up to a 125cc model from Yamaha or Honda and expect 30–50% more than the basic rate.
High season along the coast runs through July and August, when rooms and rentals both fill up fast — book ahead if you're travelling then. For calmer streets and lower prices, aim for January, February or November, just outside the holiday spike. Whichever window you choose, booking a few days early keeps your pick of models.
Morocco drives on the right, overtaking on the left. Helmets are legally required for rider and passenger alike, and it's worth wearing yours even where enforcement is relaxed. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in town and 100 km/h on the open coastal road, with frequent reductions near villages — and police radar checks at town limits are common. Morocco takes a zero-tolerance line on drink-driving, so save the local wine for after you've parked. Watch too for donkey carts and pedestrians sharing the road, and avoid riding after dark outside town.
