Picture leaving the ferry terminal and, within minutes, climbing the coast road toward Cap Spartel, wind off two seas at once. That is what a scooter buys you in Tangier — the Atlantic on one side, the Mediterranean on the other, and no bus schedule dictating when you get to see either. Ride out to the Grottes d'Hercule, park steps from the entrance, and be back in the medina in time for lunch. This is the kind of day scooter rental in Tangier is built for.
The medina's lanes are steep, narrow, and mostly closed to cars, so a scooter slips through where a taxi never could. Once you're out past the ville nouvelle, the coastal roads open up and stay in good condition all the way to Cap Malabata or down toward Asilah, so you spend your time riding, not stuck in traffic. Parking is a non-issue almost everywhere, which alone makes a scooter worth it over a rental car.
You'll need a valid driving licence — a standard car licence is usually accepted for smaller scooters, though it's worth confirming the exact class with the rental company. An International Driving Permit is recommended alongside your national licence. Most operators set a minimum age of 21, and you'll be asked for a deposit, usually as cash or a card imprint, plus your passport details.
A basic 50cc scooter runs roughly 55–90 MAD per day in low season, and 150–250 MAD per day in high season. Larger or newer premium models cost more, from about 300–500 MAD per day.
If you're after the lowest prices, aim for November to February, when demand is light and 50cc scooters sit near the bottom of the price range. If you're travelling in July or August, book ahead — that's peak season, and both prices and availability tighten up fast.
Morocco drives on the right, and overtaking is on the left. Helmets are legally required for rider and passenger alike, so keep yours on even where enforcement looks relaxed. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in town, 100 km/h on the open road, and 120 km/h on motorways, with checks common at the entrances and exits of towns. Morocco takes a zero-tolerance line on drink-driving — don't ride after any alcohol at all.
