Picture leaving the ferry terminal and, within minutes, climbing the coast road toward Cap Spartel, wind off two seas at once. That is what a scooter buys you in Tangier — the Atlantic on one side, the Mediterranean on the other, and no bus schedule dictating when you get to see either. Ride out to the Grottes d'Hercule, park steps from the entrance, and be back in the medina in time for lunch. This is the kind of day scooter rental in Tangier is built for.

The medina's lanes are steep, narrow, and mostly closed to cars, so a scooter slips through where a taxi never could. Once you're out past the ville nouvelle, the coastal roads open up and stay in good condition all the way to Cap Malabata or down toward Asilah, so you spend your time riding, not stuck in traffic. Parking is a non-issue almost everywhere, which alone makes a scooter worth it over a rental car.

Top 10 things to see in Tangier by scooter

  1. Cap Spartel — the lighthouse where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, and the classic loop west of the city.
  2. Grottes d'Hercule (Caves of Hercules) — a sea cave a few minutes past Cap Spartel, its Atlantic-facing opening shaped like the map of Africa.
  3. Achakar Beach — a quiet Atlantic beach right by the caves, an easy stop on the same ride.
  4. Cap Malabata — a headland and lighthouse east of the city, with views back across the Strait to Spain.
  5. Malabata Beach — close to town and popular for an evening ride once the heat drops.
  6. Kasbah of Tangier (Kasbah Museum) — the old fortified quarter above the medina, a short climb up with sea views.
  7. Grand Socco — the square linking medina and ville nouvelle, a good place to get your bearings before setting off.
  8. Perdicaris Park (Rmilat Forest) — a shaded pine forest on the cliffs, a cool detour off the Cap Spartel road.
  9. Asilah — a whitewashed coastal town about 45 km south, a favourite half-day run.
  10. Ksar Sghir — a small fishing village east along the Strait, quiet and scenic.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Tangier?

You'll need a valid driving licence — a standard car licence is usually accepted for smaller scooters, though it's worth confirming the exact class with the rental company. An International Driving Permit is recommended alongside your national licence. Most operators set a minimum age of 21, and you'll be asked for a deposit, usually as cash or a card imprint, plus your passport details.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Tangier?

A basic 50cc scooter runs roughly 55–90 MAD per day in low season, and 150–250 MAD per day in high season. Larger or newer premium models cost more, from about 300–500 MAD per day.

  • Prices peak in July and August, with a smaller bump around Easter and spring break.
  • November through February is the cheapest and quietest stretch to rent.

When to book a rental scooter in Tangier?

If you're after the lowest prices, aim for November to February, when demand is light and 50cc scooters sit near the bottom of the price range. If you're travelling in July or August, book ahead — that's peak season, and both prices and availability tighten up fast.

Local traffic rules in Tangier

Morocco drives on the right, and overtaking is on the left. Helmets are legally required for rider and passenger alike, so keep yours on even where enforcement looks relaxed. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in town, 100 km/h on the open road, and 120 km/h on motorways, with checks common at the entrances and exits of towns. Morocco takes a zero-tolerance line on drink-driving — don't ride after any alcohol at all.
