Marrakesh rewards anyone willing to twist a throttle. Slip out of the medina's tangle of alleys and within the hour you can be climbing into the Atlas foothills toward the Ourika Valley, stopping at roadside cafes with waterfalls in earshot, or watching the sun drop over the rock formations of the Agafay Desert. Renting a motorcycle in Marrakesh means the city and the mountains behind it both become yours to explore on your own schedule, not a tour bus timetable.
Marrakesh's medina streets are narrow, crowded and largely indifferent to cars, so a motorcycle threads through where four wheels get stuck. Once you're past the ramparts, the roads open into long, empty stretches toward the desert edges and mountain passes that a rental car would take twice as long to reach — and a motorcycle rental in Marrakesh gets you there without waiting on a driver or a group tour.
You'll need a valid motorcycle licence — the exact class depends on the engine size, so check this with the rental company when you book. An International Driving Permit is a good idea alongside your national licence. Most operators set a minimum age of 21 rather than the legal 18, and some ask that you've held your licence for a minimum period. Expect to leave a deposit, either in cash or as a card imprint, along with your passport details.
Average rental prices run around 250-280 MAD per day in low season, rising to roughly 350-450 MAD per day at the busiest times of year. Larger or newer machines can run 500-700+ MAD per day.
Book ahead if you're planning to visit between March and May or September and November — this is when riding conditions are best and demand pushes prices up. If you don't mind the heat, July and August are cheaper and easier to book last-minute, though the Tizi n'Tichka pass can close with snow in winter, so check conditions before planning a mountain route in that season.
Morocco drives on the right, with overtaking on the left. Helmets are legally required for rider and passenger alike, and it's worth wearing yours even where enforcement is patchy. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in towns, 100 km/h on open roads and 120 km/h on motorways, with radar checks common at town entrances and exits. Morocco takes a zero-tolerance approach to riding after any alcohol, so don't risk it. Watch out for donkey carts, mopeds riding against traffic and unlit vehicles after dark, especially outside the city.
