Picture leaving the guesthouse in Bophut, cutting along the coast road with the sea flashing between the palms, and being at the golden Big Buddha Temple twenty minutes later with nowhere else you have to be. That freedom is the whole point of a Ko Samui holiday, and a scooter is what makes it possible — one minute you're wandering the old shophouses of Fisherman's Village, the next you're parked at Chaweng Beach watching longtails come in. Rent a scooter in Ko Samui and the island stops being a string of resorts and starts being one connected place you can explore at your own pace.
Samui has no real public transport network, and taxis here are pricey and rarely metered, so almost everyone who wants to see beyond their own beach ends up on two wheels. The distances between beaches, temples and viewpoints run 10 to 30km — too far to walk, but an easy ride on the mostly paved ring road. A scooter also gets you up the steep inland lanes toward the hillside viewpoints that a car or songthaew can't easily manage, which is exactly where the island's best views hide.
By law you need a motorcycle-category licence — either a Thai licence, or your home licence paired with an International Driving Permit that carries the motorcycle entitlement. Rental shops on Samui often won't check, but police checkpoints do, and without the right licence your insurance is generally void. Most shops expect you to be 18 or over, and you'll usually need to leave a deposit; it's better to offer cash or a photocopy of your passport than the document itself.
A basic automatic scooter (100–125cc) runs about 150–250 THB per day in low season and 250–400 THB per day in high season. Step up to a larger automatic (150cc and above) and expect 400–600+ THB per day, with bigger motorcycles costing more still.
High season runs November through February, when demand and prices both climb, so it pays to book your scooter hire in Ko Samui a few days ahead. Low season stretches from May to October, with quieter roads and softer prices — just note the Gulf coast islands, Samui included, tend to see their wettest weather around October to December, a different pattern from the mainland.
Thailand drives on the left, so keep to the left and overtake on the right. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger alike and checkpoints do fine for going without one. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in town and up to 90 km/h on open rural roads. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, dropping to 0.02% for younger or newly licensed riders, and roadside breath tests are common, especially around holidays. Watch for sand and loose gravel on coastal bends, and for sudden monsoon downpours that make painted road markings slick.
