Rabat rewards anyone willing to cover ground. Ride out from the medina in the morning and you can be tracing the blue-and-white lanes of the Kasbah of the Udayas before the day gets hot, then coast down to the river and cross into Salé for a completely different slice of the city by lunchtime. A motorcycle turns what would be a patchwork of taxi rides into one smooth loop, with the Atlantic breeze doing most of the work.
The city was practically built for two wheels. Rabat's main sights — the Kasbah, Hassan Tower, the Chellah ruins, the twin medinas of Rabat and Salé — sit close together, but the medina's narrow lanes swallow cars and their parking spots whole. A scooter slips through where a rental car can't, and once you're outside the old walls, the coast road strings together beach towns like Témara and Skhirat into an easy afternoon run that public transport simply doesn't cover.
You'll need a valid motorcycle licence matching the size of bike you want — a car-only licence generally won't cover anything beyond the smallest scooters, so check the engine class with the rental company before booking. An International Driving Permit is recommended alongside your national licence. Most operators set a minimum age of 21 and may ask that you've held your licence for a minimum period. Expect to leave a deposit, usually in cash or as a card imprint, along with your passport details.
A basic scooter or small 125cc-class motorcycle runs around 250-300 MAD per day in low season, rising to roughly 350-500 MAD per day in high season. If you want something bigger for touring, larger-displacement motorcycles start around 600-1000+ MAD per day.
March to May and September to November bring the mildest weather and the best riding conditions, which also makes them the busiest months for bookings — reserve ahead if you're travelling then. July and August are hot inland but still draw coastal visitors, pushing prices up along the corniche. For the best rates, aim for the November-to-February window, just book a little ahead to be safe.
Morocco drives on the right, with overtaking on the left. Helmets are legally required for both rider and passenger, and it's worth wearing yours even where enforcement looks relaxed. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in town, 100 km/h on open roads, and 120 km/h on motorways, with radar checks common at town entrances and exits. Morocco takes a zero-tolerance stance on drink-driving, so save the mint tea for after you've parked.
