Picture this: the sea breeze off Varna's Sea Garden in your hair, the domes of the Cathedral of the Assumption behind you, and the whole northern Black Sea coast open ahead. That's what you get the moment you rent a scooter in Varna instead of waiting on a bus timetable. One morning you're cruising the seafront promenade past the Dolphinarium and the open-air theatre; by afternoon you could be parked at a cove near St. Constantine and Helena, or watching the sun drop over Golden Sands.
Varna is a city built for two wheels. The centre, the Sea Garden and the nearby resort strips are close enough to hop between in minutes, yet far enough apart that walking gets old fast — and finding a parking spot near the beach in July is its own kind of headache. A scooter skips both problems, and it also opens up half-day escapes beyond the city limits: a cliffside monastery, a royal park, even a full afternoon trip up the coast, all without needing a car.
For a 50cc moped you'll need at least an EU AM category licence. Anything from 125cc up requires a motorcycle category — A1 or higher. If you're unsure whether your car licence covers a 125cc scooter here, ask the rental company directly rather than assuming. Most operators expect riders to be at least 18, and a deposit is standard, taken in cash or as a card pre-authorisation — you can usually offer a larger cash deposit if you'd rather not hand over your passport. An International Driving Permit is required alongside your home licence.
Prices swing a lot with the season. Expect roughly 5–10 EUR per day in low season and 15–25 EUR per day in high season, with premium models running 20–35 EUR per day.
High season runs through July and August, when the coast is busiest and prices peak — book a few days ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, when the resorts quiet down and rental options thin out. If you can, aim for May, June or early autumn: fewer crowds, easier riding, and noticeably better prices than midsummer.
Bulgaria drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger alike, and this is actively enforced — rental prices normally include one. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on open roads, though a 50cc moped is capped at its own 45 km/h and can't go on motorways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, and enforcement is strict. Motorcycles and scooters must ride with dipped headlights on at all times, day or night.
