Varna has a way of turning a rental into an itinerary. Pick up a motorcycle near the Sea Garden and within an hour you can be standing on the cliffs of Cape Kaliakra with the Black Sea dropping away beneath you, or ducking into the cave cells of the Aladzha Rock Monastery on your way to Golden Sands. This is a coast built for two wheels — long, easy curves, sea views for kilometres at a stretch, and enough beach towns strung along the road that you can string together a full day without ever doubling back.

The old town itself is tight and often jammed in summer, which makes parking a car more trouble than it's worth. A scooter or motorcycle slips through that congestion and finds a spot at the cliffside viewpoints and beach car parks where four wheels can't. Most of the sights around Varna sit 10 to 40 km apart — too far to walk, too short to bother with a car — which is exactly the range where a rented bike does its best work.

Top 10 things to see in Varna by motorcycle

  1. Cape Kaliakra — a dramatic clifftop headland about an hour north via Kavarna, with sea views the whole way there.
  2. Aladzha Rock Monastery — a medieval cave monastery cut into a cliff face, a short detour off the coastal road near Golden Sands.
  3. Golden Sands (Zlatni Pyasatsi) — a lively beach strip just north of the city, an easy warm-up ride to start the day.
  4. St. Constantine and Helena resort — the closest coastal resort to Varna, good for a short loop before longer trips.
  5. Balchik Palace and Botanical Garden — a quirky former royal palace with terraced gardens above the sea, reached by a winding coastal road.
  6. Varna Sea Garden (Morska Gradina) — the natural starting point for most rides, with views over the port and bay.
  7. Kamchia River mouth and beach — a quieter, greener ride south of the city through the Longoza forest reserve.
  8. Byala — a small coastal town with a cliffside road known for its curves and sea views.
  9. Euxinograd Palace grounds — a former royal summer residence just outside Varna, a short ride along a coast road lined with park views.
  10. Devnya to Provadia backroads — an inland run through rolling countryside, a nice change of pace from the coast.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in Varna?

For a 50cc moped, the EU AM category is enough, available from age 16 in Bulgaria. Anything from 125cc up needs a proper motorcycle licence — A1 or higher, matched to the engine size. Whether a standard car licence covers a 125cc scooter here isn't a given, so check with the rental company before you count on it. Bring your driving licence and an International Driving Permit if your home licence isn't in Latin script. Rental shops in Varna typically ask for a deposit, either cash or a card pre-authorisation, and most set their own minimum age, usually 18 to 21.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Varna?

Expect around 49 BGN a day in low season and 78–108 BGN during the summer peak. Larger or newer machines, 500cc and up, run closer to 117–176 BGN a day in high season.

  • Rates climb steadily from spring, peaking in July and August.
  • Prices fall back down from November through March, aside from holiday weeks.
  • Booking a couple of weeks ahead for July and August helps lock in better availability and price.

When to book a rental motorcycle in Varna?

July and August are Varna's high season, when the coast is busiest and prices peak — book ahead if you're set on those dates. November to March is low season, when coastal rental largely winds down for the winter. For the best mix of good weather, light traffic and lower rates, aim for May, June or September into early October.

Local traffic rules in Varna

Bulgaria drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger alike, and this is actively enforced, so it's built into the rental price. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on open roads, and up to 140 km/h on motorways, though mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways at all. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, and enforcement doesn't look the other way. Motorcycles also need their headlights on at all times, day or night. Watch the secondary roads inland — surfaces get rougher away from the main coastal route, and stray animals do turn up unexpectedly.
