Picture ditching the transit map and gliding along the water instead. In Vancouver, Canada, a scooter turns the city into something you can loop through in an afternoon — from the sand at English Bay Beach to the market stalls of Granville Island — with the mountains and skyline as a backdrop the whole way. It's the kind of freedom that lets you find your own pace, and your own view.
Vancouver's downtown sits on a tight, flat peninsula stitched together by a continuous waterfront path, so this is genuinely one of the easiest cities in North America to ride. You can hop between Stanley Park, Yaletown and Kitsilano on paths that mostly skip car traffic altogether, turning what would be a slow walk or a fiddly bus transfer into a quick, scenic hop. If you want to rent a scooter in Vancouver, the seawall alone makes it worth it.
You'll need a full driver's licence — a regular car licence usually covers a moped or low-powered scooter, though anything faster steps up into motorcycle licence territory. Rental companies typically ask for a minimum age of 21, and you should expect a deposit or credit-card hold in your own name. An International Driving Permit isn't required by law, but it's worth carrying if your licence isn't in English or French.
Expect to pay around 7-8 CAD per day in low season, rising to roughly 15-25 CAD per day in high season, with premium models running about 30-40 CAD per day.
High season runs June through August, when the city is busiest and prices sit at their highest — book ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March; scooter rental is limited in the depths of winter, but Vancouver's mild coastal climate means shoulder months like April, May and September are a comfortable, cheaper alternative to the summer rush.
Canada drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for every scooter rider and passenger, no exceptions. In the city, speed limits are typically 50 km/h unless posted otherwise. The legal blood-alcohol limit is 0.08%, but British Columbia enforces roadside penalties from as low as 0.05%, so it's best to keep riding and drinking well separated.
