Krakow's Old Town was built for walking, but the city that surrounds it wasn't — and that's exactly where a scooter earns its keep. Cross the Vistula from Wawel Royal Castle and within minutes you're gliding along the riverside boulevards, or climbing toward Kopiec Kościuszki for a view over the rooftops that no tram ride can match. Rent a scooter in Krakow and the city stops being a checklist of sights you queue for and becomes a series of places you simply arrive at.
That's really the case for this vehicle here. The historic core and Kazimierz are compact enough to wander on foot, but the attractions that make Krakow worth a longer stay — Zakrzówek, Tyniec, Nowa Huta — sit well beyond comfortable walking range and awkwardly served by public transport. The terrain is mostly flat, traffic is manageable outside rush hour, and a scooter closes those distances without the cost or hassle of a rental car. A scooter rental in Krakow is, in short, the missing link between the Old Town and everything around it.
For scooters up to 50cc and 45 km/h, category AM covers you from age 14, and any full driving licence — including a standard car category B — is also accepted. Larger scooters count as motorcycles and need the matching motorcycle category. Rental companies in Krakow typically set their own minimum age and may ask that you've held your licence for a minimum period, so check this when booking. An International Driving Permit isn't required for EU or EEA licences, though it's worth confirming if your licence was issued outside Europe. Expect to leave a deposit, either as a card pre-authorisation or in cash, along with your passport and licence.
Average rental prices run from around 20–30 PLN per day in low season up to 60–100 PLN per day for standard scooters in high summer, with larger-engine or premium models reaching 100–160 PLN per day.
High season runs through June, July and August, with July and August the busiest and priciest months to ride. Low season stretches from November to March, when demand — and prices — drop noticeably, though Poland's winter cold makes riding impractical for much of that stretch anyway. May, June and September strike the best balance: mild weather, long daylight, and rates below the midsummer peak.
Poland drives on the right, and dipped headlights are mandatory on scooters at all times, day and night, year-round. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, with mopeds capped at 45 km/h by design and banned from motorways and expressways. The blood alcohol limit is just 0.2 g/l — effectively zero tolerance — so plan to ride sober. Watch for trams and pedestrians at crossings, who have the right of way.
