Warsaw rewards anyone willing to cover a little more ground than the tram map allows. Ride from the cobbled Market Square in the Old Town down to the Vistula Boulevards and you'll pick up the kind of riverside views most visitors never see, with the Palace of Culture and Science rising over the skyline the whole way. Cross the river toward Praga and the city switches character again — a scooter turns what would be an awkward transit transfer into a five-minute hop.
Warsaw's layout suits scooters better than it suits cars or your own two feet. The main sights — Old Town, Łazienki park, the river boulevards, Wilanów Palace — sit roughly 3 to 10 km apart, the terrain is flat, and traffic moves at a manageable city pace. You skip the parking headaches a car brings and cut hours off what walking or waiting for trams would cost you, especially when looping between the Śródmieście centre, Praga and Saska Kępa across the river.
For scooters up to 50cc and 45 km/h, a category AM licence is enough, available from age 14; any full driving licence, including a standard car category B, also covers it. Scooters over 50cc are classed as motorcycles and need the matching motorcycle category. Rental companies usually set their own minimum age and expect the licence to have been held for a while. An International Driving Permit isn't required for EU licences, though some non-EU holders may be asked for one. Expect to leave a deposit, either a card pre-authorisation or cash, along with your passport or ID.
Prices swing a lot with the season. In low season you're looking at roughly 20–25 PLN per day; in high season standard scooters run about 50–90 PLN per day, and larger-engine or premium/electric models can reach 100–150 PLN per day.
Book ahead for June, July and August if you want the best choice of models, since this is when demand and prices both peak. May, June and September offer a good middle ground — mild weather, long daylight and lighter traffic than midsummer. Winter in Warsaw brings genuine snow and ice, so riding from December through February is rarely practical, and some rental outlets close for the season entirely.
Poland drives on the right. Dipped headlights are mandatory for all motor vehicles around the clock, and helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on scooters, mopeds and motorcycles. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas at all times, rising to 90 km/h on roads outside towns; mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways or expressways. The blood alcohol limit is just 0.2 g/l, effectively zero tolerance, so plan to ride sober. Trams and pedestrians on crossings have priority, so give way accordingly.
