Kraków's Old Town was built for walking, but the reasons you came here rarely stay inside it. The salt tunnels at Wieliczka, the cliffside abbey at Tyniec, the limestone valleys of Ojców — none of them are a tram ride away, and a rental car just gets stuck in the same cobbled bottlenecks as everyone else. **Rent a motorcycle in Kraków** and you can leave the Old Town on your own schedule, swing past Wawel Castle at sunrise before the tour groups arrive, and be deep in the Tatra foothills by lunch.

This is really a city of two speeds. The historic center is dense, largely pedestrianized, and short on parking — a motorcycle slips through it far more easily than a car ever will. But almost everything worth chasing beyond the center sits 15 to over 100 km out, along riverside lanes, open countryside, and fast approach roads toward the mountains. A scooter or bicycle struggles once you're past the ring road; a motorcycle handles the whole range, from narrow Kazimierz streets to a highway run toward Zakopane, without asking you to switch vehicles.

Top 10 things to see in Kraków by motorcycle

  1. Wawel Royal Castle & Cathedral — the city's defining landmark on the Vistula, a natural point to start or end any ride.
  2. Kazimierz (former Jewish Quarter) — cobbled streets, synagogues and cafés, best seen slowly with the engine idling between stops.
  3. Wieliczka Salt Mine — a UNESCO-listed mine about 15 km southeast, an easy short hop.
  4. Tyniec Benedictine Abbey — a scenic riverside road along the Vistula leads to this cliffside 11th-century abbey.
  5. Zakrzówek Lake — a flooded limestone quarry with cliff viewpoints, minutes from downtown.
  6. Ojców National Park & Pieskowa Skała Castle — twisting countryside roads through limestone valleys, about 30 km north, ideal for a half-day loop.
  7. Niepołomice Royal Castle & Forest — flat, fast roads east of the city through one of Poland's old royal hunting forests.
  8. Bielany Camaldolese Monastery — a hilltop monastery with sweeping views over the Vistula valley, a short ride west.
  9. Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial, Oświęcim — a weightier destination about 70 km west, often ridden as a solemn day trip.
  10. Zakopane via the Zakopianka road (DK47) — the classic longer ride south toward the Tatras, with winding approach roads and alpine scenery near the Slovak border.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in Kraków?

The licence you need depends on the bike. Category A1 covers machines up to 125 cc (from age 16), A2 covers up to 35 kW (from 18), and full category A is required for anything unrestricted (from 24, or from 20 with two years on A2). If you've held a car category B licence for at least three years, that also lets you ride a 125 cc motorcycle in Poland. Most rental companies set their own minimums on top of the legal ones, and will ask to see your licence alongside a passport or ID. An International Driving Permit isn't a blanket requirement, but some non-EU licence holders are asked for one, so it's worth checking for your country before you fly. Expect a deposit as well, usually a card pre-authorization or cash, with the amount depending on the bike.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Kraków?

A standard mid-size bike runs from around 110 PLN per day in low season up to 180–250 PLN per day in peak summer. Larger-cc or adventure and touring motorcycles cost more, typically 300–500 PLN per day.

  • Cheapest: November through February
  • Priciest: July and August, the height of high season

When to book a rental motorcycle in Kraków?

June through August is high season, with July and August at their busiest and most expensive — book ahead if you're riding then. May, June and September tend to be the sweet spot: mild weather, long daylight, and noticeably lighter traffic than midsummer. Poland's winters are genuinely cold, and riding from December to February is impractical, with snow and ice affecting mountain roads especially. If cost matters more than weather, low season from November to March brings the cheapest rates, though options thin out.

Local traffic rules in Kraków

Poland drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on any motorcycle or scooter. Headlights must stay on at all times, day or night, all year round. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside them, and up to 140 km/h on motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.2 g/l, effectively zero tolerance, so it's best to treat any drinking and riding as off the table entirely.
