Gdańsk rewards anyone willing to cover ground, and a motorcycle is the easiest way to do it. Ride out from the gabled townhouses around Długi Targ in the morning, and by lunchtime you can be standing on the wooden boards of the Sopot Pier with the Baltic breeze in your face, or walking the old fortifications at Westerplatte where the first shots of the Second World War were fired. Few cities on this coast pack so much history and coastline into such an easy loop.
The Old Town itself is best explored on foot, but Gdańsk really opens up once you look past it. The city blurs into Sopot and Gdynia with barely a gap, and a bike lets you treat the whole Tricity as one playground instead of three separate day trips. Traffic along the coastal roads gets heavy in summer, buses to Hel or Sobieszewo Island run on their own slow schedule, and the hilly, lake-dotted roads of Kashubian Switzerland inland are simply not reachable by public transport at all. On two wheels, none of that is a problem.
For scooters up to 50cc, category AM is enough (or any full driving licence, including a car category B). Anything larger counts as a motorcycle: category A1 covers up to 125cc, A2 up to 35kW, and full category A is needed for unrestricted machines. A car licence (category B) held for at least three years also lets you ride a 125cc motorcycle in Poland. Rental companies usually set their own minimum age and may want the licence held for a minimum period. An IDP generally isn't required for EU licences, though it can be worth carrying if your licence isn't in Latin script. Expect to leave a deposit, either as a card pre-authorisation or in cash, along with your passport and licence.
A basic scooter or small-displacement bike runs from around 105–115 PLN per day in the quieter months, while mid-size motorcycles in peak summer typically cost 150–250 PLN per day. Larger touring or premium models can go for 300 PLN and up.
June through August is high season, with July and August the busiest and priciest weeks on the Baltic coast. November to March is low season — cold, wet, and impractical for riding, with many seasonal rental outlets closed altogether. If you want the best mix of good weather, long daylight and lighter traffic, aim for May, June or September, and book a few weeks ahead if you're set on visiting in midsummer.
Poland drives on the right. Dipped headlights are mandatory at all times for scooters and motorcycles, and helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers alike. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside towns, and up to 100–120 km/h on expressways — mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use expressways or motorways at all. The blood alcohol limit is effectively zero, at 0.2 g/l, so plan on riding sober. If you want to rent a motorcycle in Gdańsk, just use the search form at the top of the page. Have a nice trip!

When you make an online motorbike reservation you can also order the following extra services and equipment: integral helmet, GPS navigation, intercom, unlimited mileage, top case, side cases, boots, jacket, gloves, individual guide or tour, map, full insurance, one-way rental, or delivery to your chosen address.
