Khao Lak isn't a town you tick off in an afternoon — it's a long ribbon of coast that runs for miles along Phetkasem Road, with the Andaman Sea on one side and jungle-covered hills on the other. Pick up a scooter and the whole stretch opens up: a sunset stroll on Nang Thong Beach, a quiet dinner near Bang Niang Beach, or a short climb into Khao Lak–Lam Ru National Park for a lookout over the water. On two wheels, none of it feels far.

Khao Lak was built for this kind of riding. The town has no real center — it's beaches, resorts, markets and viewpoints strung out along one main road, which makes walking impractical and taxis an expensive habit. Traffic here is far gentler than Phuket or Bangkok, so even riders without much experience feel comfortable within a day. A scooter turns a scattered town into a place you can cover on your own schedule, for the price of a couple of coffees.

Top 10 things to see in Khao Lak by scooter

  1. Khao Lak–Lam Ru National Park viewpoint — a short ride up into the park rewards you with a jungle-and-coastline lookout over the Andaman Sea.
  2. Nang Thong Beach — the main beach strip in town, easy to reach for sunset and beachfront restaurants.
  3. Bang Niang Beach — a quieter stretch north of the center, close to the Thursday–Sunday night market.
  4. Nang Thong Night Market / Khao Lak Walking Street — food stalls and local crafts, a natural evening ride from most hotels.
  5. Similan Islands pier (Thap Lamu Pier) — where riders scoot down to catch the speedboat out to the Similan Islands.
  6. Tsunami Memorial Police Boat 813 — a beached patrol boat left as a memorial to the 2004 tsunami, just a short trip from town.
  7. Wat Suwan Khuha (Cave Temple) — a scenic longer ride south toward Phang Nga, leading to a cave temple with a reclining Buddha.
  8. Sri Phang Nga National Park waterfalls — jungle waterfalls inland, ideal for a half-day loop away from the coast.
  9. Khao Lak viewpoint on Phetkasem Road — a roadside lookout over the coastline on the main highway south of town.
  10. Khuraburi pier area — ride north along the coast road to a quieter stretch of fishing villages and open sea.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Khao Lak?

To legally rent a scooter you need a motorcycle-category licence — either a Thai licence or your home licence paired with an International Driving Permit that carries the motorcycle entitlement. Some local shops rent without checking, but police checkpoints along Phetkasem Road do, and insurance is generally void without the right licence. Most rentals set a minimum age around 18. A deposit is standard practice; where possible, offer cash or a photocopy of your passport rather than the original document.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Khao Lak?

A standard automatic scooter runs around 150–200 THB per day in low season and 250–350 THB per day in high season, with newer or bigger models such as a Honda PCX or Yamaha NMAX from 400–600+ THB per day.

  • December–January is peak season, with the highest daily rates.
  • May–October, the low/rainy season, brings the cheapest prices of the year.

When to book a rental scooter in Khao Lak?

High season runs November through February, when Khao Lak sees its best riding weather and busiest booking calendar — it's worth reserving your scooter ahead of a December or January trip. Low season stretches May to October, with the southwest monsoon bringing more rain but also the lowest prices, and a scooter is easy to arrange with little notice.

Local traffic rules in Khao Lak

Thailand drives on the left, so keep to the left and overtake on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police do issue on-the-spot fines for riding without one. Speed limits are around 60 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on rural highways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, and roadside breath tests are common, especially around holidays. Watch for sand and gravel on coastal bends and sudden downpours that make road markings slippery — riding carefully here goes a long way.
