Hat Yai doesn't feel like a city built for waiting around at bus stops. Once you're on two wheels, the whole southern Thai border region opens up — you can be sipping coffee below the giant reclining Buddha at Wat Hat Yai Nai one hour and watching the surf roll onto Samila Beach the next. A scooter turns this from a day of logistics into a day of riding, and that's really the appeal of choosing to rent a scooter in Hat Yai.

The city itself is compact and easy to ride, with flat roads and traffic that's busy but rarely aggressive. What makes a scooter the obvious choice, though, is what sits just outside town: Samila Beach, Songkhla Old Town and Ton Nga Chang Waterfall are all 20–40 km away, with no real public transport connecting them. On a scooter you can string several of these together in one day, on your own schedule, instead of booking separate taxis or tours.

Top 10 things to see in Hat Yai by scooter

  1. Khao Rup Chang (Hat Yai Municipal Park) — a hilltop park with a giant reclining Buddha and a viewpoint over the city, just a short ride from downtown.
  2. Wat Hat Yai Nai — home to Phra Phuttha Mahannop, one of Thailand's largest reclining Buddha statues.
  3. Ton Nga Chang Waterfall — a multi-tiered "Elephant Tusk" waterfall about 25 km out, a favourite half-day loop.
  4. Hat Yai Cable Car and Zoo — a scenic stop on the road toward Songkhla.
  5. Samila Beach, Songkhla — the classic golden-mermaid-statue beach on the Gulf of Thailand, roughly 30–40 minutes away.
  6. Songkhla Old Town — Sino-Portuguese shophouse streets and street art, easy to pair with a Samila Beach run.
  7. Khao Tang Kuan — a hilltop stupa and viewpoint over Songkhla town and the sea.
  8. Ko Yo and the Thaksin Folklore Museum — a bridge-connected island with lakeside views, a popular loop from Hat Yai.
  9. Kim Yong Market — Hat Yai's biggest market for street food and souvenirs, an easy in-town ride.
  10. Hat Yai Nai Night Market — a lively evening food market, a good way to end a day of riding.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Hat Yai?

You'll need a motorcycle-category licence — either a Thai licence, or your home licence combined with an International Driving Permit that carries a motorcycle entitlement. Some shops will hand over the keys without checking, but police checkpoints do check, and without the right licence your insurance is generally void. Most rentals set a minimum age of 18, and you should expect to leave a deposit; ask to pay cash or leave a photocopy of your passport rather than the original document itself.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Hat Yai?

A basic automatic scooter runs around 180–200 THB per day in low season, rising to roughly 250–350 THB in high season. Newer or bigger automatics (125–160cc) from established shops typically cost 300–450 THB per day.

  • Prices climb in December–January, when Thai and Malaysian holidaymakers arrive alongside the cooler-season tourist wave.
  • Prices also rise briefly around Songkran in April.
  • Rates drop from May to October, the quieter, rainier stretch of the year.

When to book a rental scooter in Hat Yai?

High season runs November through February, when demand — and prices — peak, so it's worth booking a few days ahead. Low season stretches from May to October; it's rainier, but scooters are cheaper and easier to find on short notice. If you're chasing the best mix of good weather and manageable rates, aim for the edges of high season, in November or February.

Local traffic rules in Hat Yai

Thailand drives on the left, so keep left and overtake on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and this is enforced with on-the-spot fines, so don't skip it even for a short ride. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in town and up to 90 km/h on rural roads outside the city. The legal blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, dropping to 0.02% for riders under 20, and roadside checks are common, especially around holidays — so it's best to leave the scooter parked after a drink.
