Dahab has a way of slowing you down the moment you arrive, and a scooter is the best way to enjoy that pace on your own terms. Pick one up and you can ride north along the coast road to the Blue Hole for a morning of diving and snorkeling, then carry on to the shallow turquoise waters of the Blue Lagoon without waiting on a safari jeep or haggling with a taxi driver. String together a full day along the Gulf of Aqaba — reef, desert, mountains — and you start to feel less like a visitor and more like someone who actually knows the place.
What makes Dahab so well suited to two wheels is its size and its layout. This is a small, flat town with light traffic, and almost everything worth seeing sits along a single coastal road within 5 to 20 kilometres of the centre. There is no need for a car, a guide or a big desert 4x4 to reach the good stuff — just a scooter, a full tank, and a rough sense of which direction the sea is in.
Officially, a scooter counts as a motor vehicle in Egypt, so you should carry a valid motorcycle-category licence plus an International Driving Permit. In practice, small resort shops in Dahab are often relaxed about this and may hand over a scooter against just a passport — but that doesn't make you legally covered, and an unlicensed rider isn't insured if something goes wrong. The general minimum driving age in Egypt is 18, though individual rental operators may set their own floor. Expect to leave a deposit, usually in cash or as a card pre-authorisation; some shops will ask to hold your passport instead, but a cash deposit or photocopy is the safer option since you'll want your passport on hand at checkpoints.
Average rental prices run from around 230-280 EGP per day in low season up to 400-600 EGP per day in high season for a standard scooter, with larger or automatic 150cc models running roughly 600-900 EGP per day.
High season runs roughly October to April, peaking around December to February, when the Red Sea coast fills up and prices climb accordingly. Low season is June to August, when the summer heat pushes both crowds and prices down. If you want comfortable riding weather and better availability, aim for November to March and try to book a few days ahead once you're within high season dates.
Egypt drives on the right, and a helmet is legally required for scooter riders — and simply the smartest thing you can wear here, enforcement or not. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in built-up areas and rise on open roads outside town, so keep it relaxed on the coast road. Alcohol and riding do not mix at all: Egypt applies effective zero tolerance, and the penalties are severe. Expect the occasional checkpoint on routes in and out of Sinai, so keep your passport, licence and IDP within reach, and plan to be back before dark — unlit roads and unmarked bumps make night riding genuinely risky.
