Sharm el-Sheikh is a city built along the coast, and once you're on two wheels it finally makes sense as one place instead of a string of separate hotel compounds. You can leave your resort in Naama Bay after breakfast and be walking the lanes of the Old Market in Sharm el Maya twenty minutes later, then swing out to Ras Um Sid for sunset over the reef. A scooter turns those into a single easy loop instead of three separate taxi bookings.
The tourist zones here are flat, wide and built for exactly this kind of riding — no hills, no tight medieval streets to squeeze through, just long coastal roads connecting the resorts, the marina and the old town. Distances between the good stuff add up fast, and taxis charge for every one of those kilometres, so once you rent a scooter in Sharm el-Sheikh you stop thinking twice about a detour. It's also the easiest way to actually reach the quieter corners — Nabq, Ras Nasrani — that most people on a package holiday never see because there's no bus route out there.
Officially a scooter counts as a motor vehicle in Egypt, so you're expected to hold a motorcycle-category driving licence plus an International Driving Permit. In practice, some resort shops will hand one over against a passport alone — but that doesn't make you legally covered, and an unlicensed rider isn't insured if anything goes wrong. Minimum age is generally 18, though individual operators often set their own, higher bar. A deposit is standard too: cash, a card hold, or the shop keeping your passport. We'd steer you toward cash or a copy of your passport instead, since handing over the original leaves you without ID at checkpoints.
A basic 50–125cc scooter runs about EGP 200-300 per day in low season and EGP 400-600 in high season, while a bigger or newer 150-200cc model is closer to EGP 600-900 a day.
High season runs October to April, peaking around December to February, when hotels and rental prices climb together — book ahead if you're travelling then. Low season is June to August, when the heat keeps crowds down and daily rates drop. If comfortable riding weather matters more to you than price, November to March hits the sweet spot: warm days without the summer swelter.
Egypt drives on the right, and a helmet is legally required for scooter riders — enforcement is patchy outside the big cities, but it's still the one thing worth never skipping. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in town and rise on the open desert roads further out. Alcohol and riding don't mix at all here: the law is applied as effective zero tolerance, so if you've had a drink, take a taxi instead. Expect the occasional police checkpoint too, especially heading further into Sinai — just keep your passport, licence and IDP on you.
