Picture swapping the taxi queue for open handlebars: on a scooter, Hurghada's whole Red Sea coastline opens up on your own schedule. One morning you're weaving through the spice stalls and coffee smoke of El Dahar, the old town souk, and by evening you're parked along the Marina Boulevard watching the sun drop behind the yachts and the white domes of the Al Mina Mosque. A short hop away, Sheraton Road comes alive after dark with restaurants, shisha cafes and beach bars — the kind of ride that turns a rental into an evening out.
Hurghada's tourist belt runs almost 40km along a single coastal highway, from El Gouna in the north down to Soma Bay in the south, with resort towns spaced too far apart to cover on foot and taxis that add up fast if you're going back and forth. A scooter lets you cover that flat, sun-baked road at your own pace, ducking into old-town lanes or resort promenades without ever hunting for parking — which is exactly why scooter rental in Hurghada is such a popular way to see the coast.
Legally, a scooter counts as a motor vehicle, so you should carry a valid motorcycle-category driving licence along with an International Driving Permit. In practice, many resort rental shops are relaxed about it and will hand over a scooter against a passport alone — but that doesn't make you legally licensed, and riding without one leaves you uninsured if anything goes wrong. Expect a minimum age around 18, sometimes higher depending on the shop, plus a deposit. That deposit is often taken by holding your passport rather than cash or a card, which is common locally but leaves you without ID at checkpoints — ask if you can leave a cash deposit or a copy instead.
A basic manual scooter runs around 250–300 EGP per day in low season and 450–600 EGP per day in high season, with automatic or larger models reaching 600–800+ EGP per day at the winter peak.
High season runs October to April, peaking December to February, when the coast is busiest and prices sit at their highest. Low season is June to August, when the heat is intense but scooters are cheaper and easier to book last-minute. If you're travelling over the winter peak, booking a few days ahead is worth it; outside that window you can usually arrange a rental once you've arrived.
Traffic drives on the right, and a helmet is legally required for scooter riders — wear one regardless of how loosely that's enforced outside the main tourist strips. Speed limits are around 60 km/h in town, rising to 90 km/h or more on open roads outside the resort area. Alcohol and riding do not mix here: Egypt applies an effective zero-tolerance policy, so save the sundowner for after you've parked. Aim to be off the road before dark, since unlit vehicles and unmarked speed bumps are common at night, and keep your passport, licence and IDP on you for the occasional checkpoint along the coast road.
