Hurghada was built for two wheels. Point a motorcycle north along the coast road and thirty minutes later you're wandering the marinas and lagoons of El Gouna; head south instead and the resort belt at Sahl Hasheesh and Makadi Bay opens up, mile after mile of sea on one side and desert on the other. In between sits Hurghada Marina Boulevard, where most rides start and end, and the old souk streets of El Dahar, close enough to feel like a different city entirely. This is the kind of place where the ride itself is half the reason to come.
What makes Hurghada so well suited to a motorbike is simple geography: the attractions here aren't clustered in one walkable centre, they're strung along a single long coastal corridor, often several kilometres apart. Taxis are slow and get expensive fast once you're covering that much ground. A motorcycle closes those distances in minutes and lets you stop wherever the view catches you. The roads themselves help too — mostly flat, wide and well paved, with traffic that's light to moderate compared with Cairo, so first-time riders unfamiliar with Egyptian roads can still feel comfortable here.
Legally, you need a motorcycle-category driving licence from your home country plus an International Driving Permit. In practice, some resort rental shops are relaxed about this and may hand over a bike against a passport alone — but that doesn't make you insured if something goes wrong, so it's worth turning up properly documented. The general minimum driving age in Egypt is 18, though individual operators often set their own floor. A deposit is standard, taken as cash, a card pre-authorisation, or sometimes by the shop holding your passport; we'd suggest offering cash or a copy instead, since you'll want your passport on you at the checkpoints along the coast road.
Expect to pay around 1,300–1,500 EGP per day in low season, rising to roughly 1,900–2,500 EGP per day in high season, with larger touring bikes and quads running from about 2,500–4,000+ EGP per day.
High season runs October to April, peaking around December to February when the resorts fill up and prices in EGP climb with them. Low season is June to August — hot, quiet, and the cheapest time to ride if you don't mind the heat. For comfortable riding weather without the peak-season crowds, aim for November to March, or catch October and April as shoulder months with fewer people and still-reasonable prices.
Egypt drives on the right, overtaking on the left. Helmets are legally required for motorcycle and scooter riders, and while enforcement can be patchy outside the main cities, it's still the single most important thing you'll wear. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in town and up to 100–120 km/h on the desert highways, so pace yourself accordingly on the longer coastal runs. Alcohol and riding don't mix here at all — Egypt applies an effective zero-tolerance policy with serious penalties, so plan to ride sober or not at all. Checkpoints are common along the Red Sea coast, so keep your passport, licence and IDP within reach.
