Lyon rewards travellers who go looking for it, and the best way to do that is on four wheels of your own. Climb from the riverbanks toward the Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourvière, park at the terrace, and watch the whole city — two rivers, red rooftops, the Alps on a clear day — spread out below you. Then head north and let the roads open up around the Beaujolais vineyards, where quiet lanes wind between hills of vines that most visitors never see because a bus tour simply doesn't stop there.
A quad bike suits Lyon in a way a car or a bicycle doesn't. The old town's narrow lanes and heavy traffic reward something compact and agile, while the hilly country just beyond the ring road — the Monts d'Or, the vineyard backroads, villages like Pérouges half an hour out — is close enough for a day trip but too far and too steep for casual cycling. A quad gets you into both worlds without the parking headaches of a car or the fatigue of pedalling uphill in August heat.
Note that a quad isn't the vehicle for threading Vieux Lyon's cobbled lanes or the Croix-Rousse steps themselves — treat those as park-and-walk stops, and save the quad for the open road in between.
On French public roads, a quad always requires a licence — a category B1 or full B car licence, depending on the machine, which the rental company will confirm for your model. Rental agencies in Lyon commonly set a minimum age of 18 or higher, and you'll usually need a valid passport and a refundable deposit taken by card pre-authorisation, with the amount depending on the quad class. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence.
Expect to pay 15-25 EUR per day in low season and 35-55 EUR per day in high season, with premium models running 60-90 EUR per day.
High season runs June through August, peaking sharply in late July and August when the whole country is on holiday — book ahead if you want a specific model. Low season stretches from November to March, when prices fall and choice is easier to come by. For the best mix of good weather and lighter traffic, May, June and September are hard to beat.
France drives on the right. Helmets aren't legally required for quad riders the way they are for scooters, but we recommend wearing one regardless, along with sturdy footwear. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas, 80 km/h on two-way rural roads without a central barrier, and lower still if your licence is less than three years old. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to an effective zero — 0.2 g/l — during a probationary licence period. Lyon also runs a low-emission zone (ZFE), so check whether your rental needs a Crit'Air sticker before heading into the centre.
