Clermont-Ferrand looks calm from its cathedral square, but the real invitation starts the moment you leave the ring road. Head west and the city gives way to the Chaîne des Puys, a stretch of dormant volcanic cones that most visitors only glimpse from a car window. On a quad you can actually get into it — up the tracks toward Puy de Pariou, along the ridgelines near Col de Ceyssat, out to a lakeside lunch at Lac d'Aydat. It's a landscape built for exploring at your own pace, and a quad is the vehicle that makes that possible.
The city itself is small enough to walk. What isn't walkable — or really driveable, given how tight and unpaved some of the volcanic tracks get — is the park just beyond it. A quad bridges that gap: sturdy enough for gravel and steep cols, nimble enough for the narrow lanes between craters, and quick enough that a full loop through the Auvergne countryside fits comfortably into a single day. If you want to rent a quad bike in Clermont-Ferrand, this is exactly the terrain it was made for.
On public roads in France, a quad always requires a licence. Light quadricycles up to 50cc fall under the AM category, while heavier machines need a B1 or full category B car licence, depending on the model — the rental company will confirm which applies to the quad you book. A deposit is standard practice, usually held by credit card and released on undamaged return; ask us to confirm the exact amount and insurance excess for your chosen vehicle. Non-EU visitors are advised to carry an International Driving Permit alongside their national licence.
Prices vary with the season: expect roughly 15-40 EUR per day in low season, rising to 50-90 EUR per day in high season, with premium models running 90-150 EUR per day.
High season runs June through August, peaking hard in late July and August when France itself goes on holiday — book ahead if you're travelling then, as good machines sell out first. Low season stretches from November to March, with quieter tracks and lower prices, but May, June and September are the sweet spot: settled weather, long daylight and noticeably better rates than midsummer.
France drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider, and CE-approved gloves are a legal requirement too — France enforces this more strictly than most countries, with fines and licence points for riders caught without them. Speed limits on rural roads outside built-up areas are generally 80 km/h, dropping to 50 km/h once you pass a town-name sign. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightening to 0.2 g/l for riders in their first three years of licence — effectively zero.
