There is something about the road out of Annemasse that pulls you straight up into the mountains. Point a quad toward Mont Salève and within minutes you are climbing hairpins with Lake Geneva unrolling below you, Geneva's rooftops catching the light and, if the sky cooperates, Mont Blanc on the horizon. Head the other way and the forests of the Massif des Voirons swallow you up, dirt tracks winding past old monastery ruins where the loudest sound is your own engine.
Annemasse is built for exactly this kind of riding. The town sits wedged between the Salève cliffs and the Voirons, with Lake Geneva just beyond, so the terrain shifts fast from paved switchbacks to unpaved forest trail — the kind of mixed surface a scooter simply cannot handle and city traffic would only get in the way of. A quad lets you cover the distance to nearby villages, gorges and viewpoints in a single afternoon, then swap tarmac for track whenever the mood strikes.
On French public roads a licence is always required for a quad. Lighter machines up to 50cc fall under the AM category, while heavier quads need a B1 or a full car licence, depending on how the vehicle is classed — our partner agencies will confirm which applies to the model you pick. Visitors from outside the EU should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. A deposit is standard practice, usually held as a card pre-authorisation and released when the quad comes back undamaged; the exact amount depends on the machine, so confirm it with the rental company when you book.
Prices swing a lot with the season. The cheapest small quads start from around 15 EUR per day in the winter off-peak, while a standard quad in the summer typically runs 80 to 150 EUR per day. Larger, two-seat or unrestricted models can reach 150 to 250 EUR per day or more in high season.
High season runs June to August, peaking hard in late July and through August when the whole country is on holiday — book ahead if you want a specific model. Low season stretches from November to March, when several operators near the mountains scale back or close. For the best mix of open roads, mild weather and lower prices, aim for May, June or September; early October is often still pleasant too.
France drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider, and they need to be ECE-approved with reflective stickers on the front, back and both sides. Speed limits are 80 km/h on two-way rural roads without a central barrier, dropping to 50 km/h once you pass a town's name sign — watch for the mountain roads around the Salève and Voirons, where limits and hairpins demand extra care. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightening to effectively zero for riders still in their first three years of holding a licence.
