Picture leaving the crowds at Place des Lices behind, the pétanque players and café chatter fading in your mirrors as you lean into the coast road toward Pampelonne. A motorcycle in Saint-Tropez turns the town from a postcard you walk through into a place you actually cover — the beach clubs south of the port, the perched village lanes of Ramatuelle, the lighthouse view from Cap Camarat — all within easy reach and without waiting on a taxi.
Saint-Tropez's old town was built for foot traffic, not cars: streets around the port are narrow, parking is scarce in season, and a two-wheeler slips into spots a Renault never will. Once you're out past La Foux, the coast road to the beaches and the climbs up to Ramatuelle and Gassin are made for a bike — scenic, winding, and miserable to sit through in a car queue every July afternoon.
For a 50cc scooter, an AM licence covers you, available from age 14, or automatically if you hold a full car or motorcycle licence. Step up to a 125cc scooter and you'll need an A1 motorcycle licence, or a category B car licence held for at least two years plus a short mandatory training course. Rental companies in Saint-Tropez usually set their own minimum age, often 18 or higher for larger machines. Expect a card deposit on pickup, refunded when the bike comes back undamaged, and non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence.
Prices swing hard with the calendar. In low season you're typically looking at 25-35 EUR per day, while high season pushes that to 50-80 EUR per day, and premium models can run 80-120+ EUR per day.
If you want the best mix of weather and value, May, June and September are the sweet spot — warm, sunny, and far less traffic than the summer peak. High season runs June through August, cresting hard in late July and August when reservations should go in well ahead. Low season, November through March, brings the calmest roads and the lowest prices, though some outlets scale back their hours.
France drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a scooter or motorcycle, and CE-approved gloves are a legal requirement too — unusual, but strictly enforced. Keep your headlight on at all times, day or night. Speed limits drop to 50 km/h in town and generally 80 km/h on the open rural roads around the peninsula. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightening to effectively zero if you're within your first three years of holding a licence.
