Perth doesn't reveal itself from a bus window. You feel the city properly when you're the one steering — slipping through CBD traffic on the way to Kings Park for a skyline view over the Swan River, or opening the throttle south toward Fremantle's old port streets. A motorcycle turns those separate errands into one continuous, breezy afternoon, and that's before you've even reached the coast.
Perth is a spread-out, low-density city, which is exactly where two wheels earn their keep. Distances that make driving tedious — out to the Pinnacles, down to Margaret River, up into the Perth Hills — disappear much faster and cheaper on a bike, while the CBD-to-Fremantle run rewards you with easy lane filtering and painless parking. The coastal and hill roads nearby aren't just scenery to drive past; they're built for riding.
You'll need a valid motorcycle licence — Australia doesn't let a car licence cover mopeds or scooters, and this applies even to small 50cc machines. If you're on a learner or provisional permit, you're restricted to LAMS-approved bikes capped at 660cc; a full licence is required for anything larger. An International Driving Permit isn't required. Most operators ask riders to be at least 18, sometimes older for bigger-capacity machines, and you'll need to leave a deposit or credit-card pre-authorisation in your own name, with the amount depending on the vehicle you choose.
Winter (June to August) is the cheapest stretch, with standard mid-size motorcycles running around AUD 60-90 per day and small-capacity bikes or scooters as low as AUD 25-40. Over summer and school holidays, expect AUD 90-140 per day for the same mid-size class. Larger tourers, cruisers and adventure bikes sit at AUD 150-300+ per day year-round.
If your dates are flexible, June to August is the low season — cooler, quieter and cheapest, though some fleets run smaller. December through February is the busiest and priciest stretch, driven by summer and school holidays, with another smaller peak around Easter in April. Booking a few weeks ahead for summer dates is a sensible move, since the best bikes get snapped up first.
Australia drives on the left, so give-way rules, roundabouts and overtaking all run the opposite way from what North American or European riders are used to. Helmets are compulsory by law for every rider, no exceptions, and motorcycles are required to ride with headlights on at all times. Default speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 100 km/h on open rural roads, with speed cameras in wide use, so keep an eye on the signs. The blood alcohol limit is 0.05 for full licence holders and zero for learner or provisional riders, and random breath testing is common, so plan your rides accordingly.
