Sydney doesn't give up its best side easily — you have to go and find it, and a motorcycle is how locals do exactly that. Point one south along the coast and you're cliff-hugging between Bondi and Coogee with the Pacific on one side the whole way. Point one north over the Harbour Bridge and the skyline opens up beneath you, steel girders overhead, ferries crawling across the water below. This is a city built around water, headlands and bush, and the fastest way to feel like you actually live here — rather than just visiting — is on two wheels.

Sydney's geography is the whole argument for riding it. Harbour inlets and beach suburbs push the road network into long, indirect loops that a car has to follow but a bike can shortcut past, splitting lanes through the CBD crawl and parking in five minutes flat near the sand. The city also happens to sit at the doorstep of some of the best riding roads in the country — the Royal National Park's forest bends, the Old Pacific Highway's switchbacks — day trips that are a headache by public transport and a pleasure on a motorcycle. If you want to rent a motorcycle in Sydney, this is a city that rewards it more than most.

Top 10 things to see in Sydney by motorcycle

  1. Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk — ride the clifftop road linking Sydney's most famous beaches, one ocean view after another.
  2. Watsons Bay & The Gap — a dramatic sandstone cliff lookout right at the entrance to the harbour.
  3. Sydney Harbour Bridge — the classic crossing, skyline views included; every visiting rider does this one.
  4. The Rocks — cobblestone laneways under the bridge, worth parking up for a coffee or a pub stop.
  5. Royal National Park — twisty forest and coastal roads through Australia's oldest national park, a favourite with local riders.
  6. Bald Hill Lookout, Stanwell Park — sweeping Pacific views from the cliff where the hang-gliders launch.
  7. Sea Cliff Bridge, Clifton/Coalcliff — an elevated bridge hugging the cliffside, one of the best-known motorcycle roads near Sydney.
  8. Manly via the Spit Bridge — a harbourside ride ending at Manly Beach and its promenade.
  9. Palm Beach and Barrenjoey Lighthouse — a quieter run out to the northern beaches peninsula tip.
  10. Old Pacific Highway — the legendary winding bushland road north of the city, a long-standing weekend favourite for locals.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in Sydney?

You'll need a valid motorcycle licence — a car licence alone doesn't cover scooters or mopeds in Australia, even the small 50cc ones. If you're on a learner or provisional licence, you're restricted to LAMS-approved machines capped at 660cc; a full licence is required for anything bigger. Operators generally want riders to be at least 18, older still for larger-capacity bikes, and you'll need to leave a deposit as a credit-card pre-authorisation in your own name. An International Driving Permit isn't a legal requirement here, but it's worth carrying alongside your home licence.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Sydney?

Prices swing a lot with the season and the bike. An entry-level scooter or small motorcycle runs from around AUD 8–10 per day in low season up to AUD 20–35 per day in high season, while a bigger or premium motorcycle can run AUD 60–120+ per day.

  • December and January — Australian summer and school holidays — are the priciest months.
  • Easter also pushes rates up.
  • June to August, the southern winter, is when prices drop and the city is quietest.

When to book a rental motorcycle in Sydney?

High season runs December to February, when the beaches are packed and fleets book out fast — reserve ahead if you're coming then. Low season, June to August, is cold and quiet with cheaper rates but a smaller selection of bikes. For the best of both worlds, aim for March to May or September to November: mild weather, stable conditions and prices well below midsummer.

Local traffic rules in Sydney

Australia drives on the left, so expect give-way and roundabout rules to run the opposite way from continental Europe or the US. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger, and they need to meet the Australian/New Zealand safety standard. Default speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, dropping to 40 km/h in school zones, and up to 100–110 km/h on highways and open roads — speed cameras are common, so keep an eye on the signage. The blood alcohol limit is 0.05 for full licence holders, but zero for learner and provisional riders, and random breath testing is routine. Ride with your headlight on at all times — most bikes have it wired permanently — and leave handheld phones alone; the fines are steep and the cameras are watching.

Extra services available

When you make an online motorbike reservation you can also order the following extra services and equipment: integral helmet, GPS navigation, intercom, unlimited mileage, top case, side cases, boots, jacket, gloves, individual guide or tour, map, full insurance, one-way rental, or delivery to your chosen address.
