Perth has a way of rewarding anyone willing to cover ground on two wheels. Glide along the Swan River foreshore path from Elizabeth Quay toward South Perth, with the city skyline reflected in the water beside you, or roll through the shaded, cliff-top trails of Kings Park before the day heats up. A bicycle turns these into a single unhurried afternoon instead of a series of taxi rides.
What makes this such a natural fit is the layout of the city itself. Perth's centre, river foreshore and beach suburbs are strung together by flat, well-paved shared paths, so distances that are too far to walk but fiddly to drive — and a headache to park — disappear once you're on a saddle. If you want to rent a bicycle in Perth, you can leave a rental car in the garage and still reach the coast, the river and the old port town of Fremantle in a single day.
Good news: no licence is required to ride a bicycle in Australia, at any age, and an International Driving Permit isn't relevant here either. What is required by law is a helmet, for every rider regardless of age, and it's actively enforced with on-the-spot fines. Most operators ask for a minimum age (commonly around 18 for the person booking) and take a small deposit or credit-card pre-authorisation, though this varies by shop and by bike.
A basic city or hybrid bike runs 8–15 AUD per day in low season and 20–30 AUD per day in high season, while e-bikes and road bikes typically cost 40–60 AUD per day.
If you can, aim for March to May or September to November: the weather is mild, the paths are quieter and prices sit well below the summer peak. December to February is high season, with warm weather, school holidays and the highest rates, so it pays to book ahead. June to August is cheapest, though it's also cooler and wetter, so pack accordingly if you're riding then.
Australia drives on the left, and that applies to cyclists too — keep to the left on shared paths and roads alike. A helmet meeting the Australian/New Zealand standard is compulsory for every rider, no exceptions. Built-up areas are generally limited to 50 km/h and school zones to 40 km/h during posted hours, which keeps traffic manageable around the routes you'll be riding. Motorists overtaking a cyclist must leave at least 1 metre of space at 60 km/h or under, and 1.5 metres above that, so drivers are used to giving bikes room. If you're combining riding with driving on the same trip, remember the blood alcohol limit is 0.05 for full licence holders and zero for learners.
