Canberra doesn't feel like most capital cities, and that's exactly why it rewards two wheels. Glide along the Lake Burley Griffin foreshore path at sunrise and you'll have almost 28km of flat, mostly car-free trail to yourself, with the water on one side and the city's landmarks unfolding on the other. Push a little further and the climb up to the National Arboretum pays you back with a hilltop forest of a hundred different gardens and a view over the whole lake basin that no bus tour stops long enough to give you.
This is a spread-out, low-density capital built around a lake rather than stacked into a compact old centre, and it was designed with cyclists in mind from the start — over 400km of dedicated paths link its landmarks with gentle grades that make ambitious rides feel manageable. Distances that would wear out a walker are easy on a bike, and a rental unlocks lookouts like Mount Ainslie and Black Mountain that public transport barely touches, while the flat lake circuit still suits anyone who just wants a relaxed pedal.
Good news for cyclists: no licence is required at any age, and no International Driving Permit either. Riding a helmet is compulsory by Australian law, and we'll make sure yours fits before you set off. Most rental partners will ask for a card deposit at pickup, with the amount depending on the bike you choose — e-bikes and premium hybrids usually carry a slightly higher deposit than standard city bikes.
Average prices for a standard city or hybrid bike run from around AUD 8/day in the quiet winter months up to AUD 20–35/day during the summer peak. If you want an e-bike or a premium hybrid to make those hilltop climbs easier, expect to pay AUD 40–60/day.
High season runs December to February, when warm weather and school holidays bring the most visitors — and the highest prices. Low season is June to August: cold, quiet, and noticeably cheaper, though some operators run smaller fleets. If you'd rather skip both extremes, aim for spring (September–November) or autumn (March–May), when the weather is mild, the paths are calm, and rates sit comfortably below midsummer highs.
Australians drive — and cycle — on the left, so keep that in mind at junctions and roundabouts if you're used to the opposite side. Helmets are compulsory for every rider, adults included, and it's an offence enforced with on-the-spot fines, so never skip one. If you're riding after dark, front and rear lights plus a rear reflector are required by law. Cars are legally required to leave you at least 1 metre of space when overtaking on roads up to 60 km/h, and 1.5 metres above that, so Canberra's drivers are used to giving cyclists room. Around town, expect a 50 km/h default speed limit, dropping to 40 km/h near schools during posted hours — useful context for judging how fast traffic moves past you on shared roads.
