Corsica's southeast corner rewards anyone willing to leave the car behind, and Lecci is a perfect base for it. From here you're minutes from the pine-fringed sands of Plage de Palombaggia and the turquoise lagoon of Plage de Santa Giulia, with the walled lanes of Porto-Vecchio's old town close enough for an easy morning ride. A scooter rental in Lecci puts all of it within reach, on your own schedule, without hunting for parking at every beach car park along the coast.
This stretch of the island suits two wheels especially well. Porto-Vecchio's citadelle is a maze of narrow, congested streets where a car becomes a liability and a scooter simply threads through. The beaches nearby sit just a short hop apart, so instead of driving and parking at each one, you can dart between Palombaggia, Santa Giulia and the quieter cove at Cala Rossa in the time it would take to find a single parking spot. For longer runs up toward the mountains, a scooter still handles the scenery well, even if a proper motorcycle has the edge on the tightest switchbacks.
For a 50cc scooter (up to 45 km/h), you'll need an AM category licence — anyone holding a full car licence, or born before 1 January 1988, already qualifies. For 125cc models, you'll need either an A1 motorcycle licence or a car licence held for at least two years, plus a short training course. Rental agencies in Lecci typically ask for a minimum age of 18 regardless of licence class. A security deposit is standard, usually pre-authorised on your credit card and released when the scooter comes back undamaged; confirm the exact amount with your chosen operator. If your licence isn't from the EU or EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with it, just to be safe.
Expect to pay 25-35 EUR per day in low season, and 45-70 EUR per day in high season, with premium models running 60-90 EUR per day.
If you're set on July or August, book well ahead — this is when Corsica fills up fastest and the cheaper scooters go first. Aim for late spring or September instead if you can: the Bavella road is open, the coast is quieter, and daily rates sit well below the summer peak. Outside the November-to-March low season, availability tightens considerably, so a week or two of lead time is a sensible minimum in the shoulder months.
France drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a scooter, and gloves are legally required too — France enforces this more strictly than most countries, with fines for riding without them. Keep your headlight on at all times, day or night. Speed limits top out at 80 km/h on rural two-way roads and drop to 50 km/h through any town, which covers most of the ride between Lecci's beaches. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, so it's simplest to treat drinking and riding as off-limits entirely.
